2 February 2003 - The Hospital

Lisa

Lisa checked her clipboard briefly as she stepped into the hospital room. It was a double room, but only one bed was occupied at the moment. Poor girl had been at that nasty airport explosion, and had been hit by some shranel that had caused a need for surgery. Fortunately, Lisa had been able to pick her out as her patient - it helped to have a telepathic janitor in the hospital.

For the most part, they didn't have any problems appearing to be human. But there were certain parts of their anatomy which would never fool a doctor into thinking they were human. This was another of the many funtions of YIRASS - putting the bare minimum of two people into every appropriate hospital. And any alien with Healing was regarded as being on permanent 'on call' to every alien, whether they chose to study medicine or not. After all, accients do happen, and people do get hurt and sick, but with any luck, their presence on Earth would never be revealed.

In medicine, especially, it was useful that Telepathy was such a common power. Even moreso that even a beginner at Ga'Revali could block memories.

Lisa stepped into the room and smiled at the girl.

"And how are we doing today?"

AJ

AJ rubbed her eyes as she sat up slowly.

"Umm... the usual?" she squinted up at the doctor.

She looked around the room, her eyes beginning to adjust. She hated sleeping during the day.

Rubbing her forehead, she looked up again.

"So uh... can you tell me what happened? And where's my father? And Marco?"

Lisa

"There was a bomb at the airport," Lisa explained. "Your father is fine, only superficial injuries, but we had to operate on you. Internal bleeding. You're going to have to stay here for awhile, just so we can make sure you heal properly. Who's Marco? Your brother? Boyfriend?"

She paused, closed the door, and then scooted to the chair next to AJ.

"I should probably introduce myself. I'm Dr Patterson, but you may call me Lisa. I'm alien too - I have Healing. You are actually fine now, but human doctors tend to get suspiscious if you do anything out of the ordingary."

AJ

"You... you're a... an alien?" AJ's eyes widened, "woah..."

She glanced toward the window, then put a hand to her forehead.

"Umm, sorry, I just haven't met many recently. Well actually, two or three in the past few years," she couldn't help but chuckle a little - it was a bit overwhelming.

"Marco... Marco is a guy I met off the net. I ah, came here to meet him cos my dad was here on business and I thought 'what the hell?'" she began again, "he's, umm..."

She hesitated, looking the doctor over.

"He says he's an animorph. He's not hurt, is he?"

Lisa

"Oh! An animorph! I know who you're talking about now," Lisa said. "I've met all the animorphs. As far as I know, he's fine. A little smoke inhalation, but otherwise fine."

Lisa stood up.

"Anyway, I'd love to stay and chat a little longer, but I have more rounds to attend to. Your father came to visit you this morning, but you weren't awake yet. I believe he's planning on coming again before visiting hours are over."

AJ

"Oh," AJ bit her nails, nervously.

"Well, I guess I'll see him later. Dad probably won't turn up until just before visiting hours are over."

She rolled her eyes, knowing him.

"If he even comes at all."

**********

As AJ expected, she had a visitor just 10 minutes before.

"Dad!" she exclaimed as he came through the door.

He held a finger to his lips, indicating for her to be quiet.

"Someone's asleep in the next room."

"Sorry."

He grinned, then pulled up a chair next to her.

"Hey... there's something I need to ask you..." he began quietly.

"What?" she demanded, hating it when he acted like this.

It was typical of 'something has come up' or 'would you mind...?'.

"Well," he began again, not looking at her, "I've sorted out what I came here to do, and really there's nothing else. But I've been called in to Oklahoma from the 18th for a couple of days..."

AJ groaned.

"I want to know if you'd rather go straight home, if you're out of hospital, or come with me. If you're still in I'll have to have you moved with me, ok?"

"Well it's not like I have a choice."

"You have the choice whether to go home or not."

"Then not."

Her father smiled.

"I heard the ah, alien doctor came and spoke with you. Do you like her?"

"She's alright," AJ shrugged, "it's weird being around another alien though. Have you seen Marco?"

"Marco? No. If you see him, don't forget to tell him we're leaving on the 17th. Hospitalized or no."

"Ok."

It was about that time that's AJ's father was asked to leave. They said 'goodbye' and parted ways for the night.
