23 December 2003 - The business is entertainment

Michelle

Oliver and Leroy

Leroy stretched his arms above his head and smiled at Oliver who was sitting on a nearby chair.

"Last meeting of the day."

Oliver nodded. He was looking forward to today being over. Tomorrow was Christmas Eve and the first day of the work holidays.

There was a knock on the door.

"Come in," Leroy said.

The door opened and in walked a man.

"Kale Duthren, I presume?" Leroy said, standing up to shake his head.

"Yes," Kale nodded. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr Brown."

"Leroy will be fine," Leroy said. "This is my apprentice, Oliver."

"Nice to meet you."

"And you too."

"All right," Leroy went on, as they all sat down. "So, down to business."

"Right," Kale nodded. "And the business is entertainment."

"Oh?"

"For all of our lives, we've been stuck with human TV, and human movies. Now don't get me wrong, nothing against humans here, but haven't all of us at one time wished to have some good ol' Dathrian (and Semirellian) TV and movies?"

"Of course," Leroy smiled. "But security doesn't make that possible."

"Exactly. But you can't get to this space station unless you know about, or are one of us. This is our city. Here we make our own rules. Leroy, Oliver, I understand that the renovation on block D are not yet complete, and in any case it's virtually empty?"

"Yes... so?"

"I would like to make block D into a studio. Or studios, rather. For the purpose of creating our own TV and movies. We have the means to make this possible. There is not one Dathrian who has wished to be in this industry who hasn't wished they could play more than just a human. This is our chance to really shine and fully express the talents we have, and not just on the acting side. The crew would be able to actually use their powers to create, and not be limited to human technololgy."

Leroy was silent for a moment, then looked at Oliver.

"What do you think?" he asked slowly.

"He does have a point," Oliver said slowly. "You can't get here unless you're one of us. And there was that thing a few months ago where the residents wanted to be able to get earth television - which we were able to organise. Plus we have the cinema. It sure sounds workable to me."

"Hmm..."

More silence.

"The renevators are on break at the moment," Leroy said. "And in anycase, we don't expect to have any residents on block D for some time. Very well. I will grant you the use of the fourth level to begin with. That one hasn't been renovated yet. When the renovators get back on the job next year, you may direct them as you see fit."

"Thank you very -"

"However," Leroy went on, putting up his hand, "I expect to be given regular updates on your progress until further notice. And you will consult me on matters regarding the population of this station, and any other major decisions."

Kale nodded.

"I understand, of course."

"Good. Understand also, I reserve the right to pull the plug on this project. Having said that, I hope I don't have to."

Kale nodded again.

"Yes. Thank you again."

The men soon finished their conversation and the meeting broke up.
