4 December 2003 - It's a walking death trap

Michelle

Oliver and Yvette

"Hey, where were you today?" Yvette asked.

"Working. Thursday is my day at the control centre, remember?"

"Oh yeah," Yvette giggled. "Maybe I should become an apprentice, just so I don't miss you at school every Thursday."

Oliver chuckled.

"Y'know... not every apprenticeship requires a day off."

"I'll find one that does."

"What's there to say you'll get Thursday. Maybe you'll get Wednesday."

"Oh, shush you."

Oliver grinned.

"Soooo... how was work?"

"Actually, today was pretty quiet. Which is why I'm home on time for a change."

Yvette giggled.

"That so, huh?"

"Yeah. What's going to happen when you're done with school? You working there all the time?"

"I plan on becoming an agent."

Yvette nearly choked on her drink.

"What?"

"I want to be a YIRAAS agent."

"Why?"

"Well because it's -"

"No, I don't want to know. I don't want to hear your fantasies about the glamour and all that crap."

"Hey, I happen to think it's all pretty exciting. I was a junior member for a time."

"Yeah, only because your uncle was one and had custody of you."

"Which means I'm talking for experience."

"That kind of work as a kid is a lot different than as an adult. People die."

"People always die."

"Not by your hand. And you don't have people thirsting after your blood every day either. How often - before the space station - did you hear of a retired field agent who lived more than a year?"

"Vette -"

"It's a walking death trap."

"Vette you're being silly. It's not all that bad. And field agents are important to our survival you know. Someone has to keep the alien hunters at bay, before they kill all of us. Plus there's -"

"Oliver, I do not want to hear your justification for such a stupid career choice, and I swear if you ever become an agent, this friendship is over. I don't want to mourn your death."

Oliver shook his head.

"We all die some day, Vette. Is it so bad of me to want to try and make a difference with mine?"

Yvette gave him a dark look.

"This discussion is over."
