Miette
Rowena was a mess, and she knew it. Financially, she was all right for the short term, but she knew she would have to get a job. But, what with Billy to look after, she knew this was going to be difficult to say the least. Afterall, she would also have to find care for Billy while she was working, and she wasn't sure what the availability was like for alien child care.
She would have to ask the Morris's.
There was a knock on the door and Rowena stood to answer it, partly relieved to get away from pouring through the newspaper for awhile.
"Miette!"
"Hi Mum," Miette smiled.
Rowena hugged her daughter.
"Oh, Mi," she said. "Where have you been? How... you're so warm! You're not coming down with something are you?"
"No, no," Miette replied, stepping inside. "But I... I guess I have a lot of explaining to do."
Rowena smiled.
"Why don't you take a seat in the dining room, and I'll fix us some tea."
Miette nodded, and soon she was relating all that had happened to her the last few months. The Eye tampering with her, the bank robberies, her mutation, the cult, kidnapping Isaac and Taylor, everything.
"I left the Hansons that night, when everyone was asleep. I just felt so.... awkward there," Miette said. "I sort of drifted for a bit, and then I went back to my cult. But they... it felt so wrong, you know?"
Rowena nodded and sipped her tea.
"So I guess I effectively disbanded them. I told them I was going on a long journey, and that like any journey I couldn't tell them where it would take me nor when I would come back. They fussed a little, but eventually they were satisfied. I was going to take my marks off them, but, hmm... I had a feeling that would be a very bad idea."
Rowena smiled.
"Quite possibly."
"Anyway, then I met up with a telepath in the hopes she could help me get rid of Craig's tampering. Unfortunately, mainly due to my mutation, she told me she couldn't really do anything without it hurting, but that the changes were breaking down on their own and I'll probably be back to my old self within a year. So I opted for the slow and... confusing process rather telepathic sugery without anesthesia."
"I don't blame you," Rowena smiled. "Probably would have gone that way myself."
Miette smiled back.
"Vicky was able to help me get a job though. I'm starting work as an adminstrator in Englands' YIRAAS Headquarters."
"Oh really?"
"Yes. I'm really looking forward to it. And the pay is good too, although sometimes I wonder where YIRAAS gets its money from, but I guess some questions you don't need the answers to."
Miette reached across and took her mothers hand.
"I... I can move back in... can't I? I'll pay my room and board, of course and -"
"You don't even need to ask, Mi," Rowena smiled. "I'm more than happy to have you back."
"Thank you," Miette was about to go on when Billy started crying.
"Oh! You wouldn't have met your baby brother yet," Rowena said. "Come with me."
Miette followed her mother to Billy's room.
"This is Biily. He's a shapeshifter."
"Oh wow," Miette said. "He's so cute!"
Rowena smiled, then Miette frowned.
"What... what does Dad..."
"Your father's opinion doesn't count for much these days. I kicked him out."
"You... you did?"
"There were a few reasons, but mainly the powers."
"Oh."
"I've been trying to find a job. And of course, I need to find someone to take care of Billy when I'm working."
Miette nodded.
"Well, since I'm working at YIRAAS now, I'll see what I can find out."
"Thanks, honey."
Mother and daughter continued chatting and otherwise becoming reaquainted.
