Gwen
Gwen was laying on the bed talking to Mordred when she felt the odd sensation of water running down her legs.
Either she'd peed her pants or... uh-oh.
"Mordred, hate to alarm you but... my water just broke."
Mordred
Mordred stared at her.
"Oh, bloody hell."
He fainted.
Gwen
"Oh fan-bloody-tastic."
Gwen sighed and slowly got to her feet. She walked over to the wheelchair that still sat in their room and sat in it. She manoevered herself to the door, going carefully around Mordred. She opened the door and wheeled herself to Vort's room and knocked on the door.
"Vort, Spike! Mordred's fainted, can you bring him down to the medlab?"
Without waiting for an answer, she went to the elevator and wheeled herself in, and went down to the medlabs.
"Dr McCoy?"
Vortigern, Spike and Mordred
"Yes?" Hank came out of his office and took one look at her before going and helping her up onto the bed.
"You don't need to push yet, you're not dilated enough," he explained to her.
Vortigern and Spike went to get Mordred.
With a bit of chivvying, a mostly awake Mordred was ushered into the medlab.
"Gwen?"
Gwen
"Hey, sorry, I wasn't able to... you know, help. But I wasn't really able to bend down."
Gwen smiled sheepishly, then winced.
"Ow."
Mordred and Spike
Hank was calm and proffessional. This went a long way to calming Mordred.
"S'ok. I can't believe I-"
"Fainted like a nancy boy?" Spike said, lifting an eyebrow.
"Shut up, Spike."
Mordred went to Gwen's side and took her hand in his.
"You just listen to what the doc says, ok, love?"
Gwen
"Mordred, I'm not exactly planning to deliver these kids myself," Gwen said dryly.
She squeezed his hand.
"I'll be... ok, owwww."
Mordred, Vortigern and Spike
Mordred winced slightly.
"I know, I'm just..."
"I'm going now," Vortigern said.
"Ok."
Vortigern and Spike left.
Hank checked to see how far she was dilated.
"You're still only about half dilated of what you need to be..."
Gwen
"Worried?"
Gwen brought his hand to her mouth and kissed it.
"It'll be good. I'm fantastic at everything I do, childbirth should be no different."
She grinned.
"Stirrups... kinda breezy around my genitals."
Mordred
Mordred coughed slightly as he remembered a time when she'd used a similair phrase...
"Cold..." Gwen said, opening her eyes slowly.
Uh-oh.
"Well... it's not everyday a girl wakes up to find the breeze blowing around her genitals."
Gwen
Gwen squeezed Mordred's hand.
"OWIE!"
Mordred
"Breathe, Gwen, breathe in deeply and slowly, and breathe out slowly again," Hank said in a calming tone.
"It's too early to start pushing."
Mordred winced slightly as Gwen ground the bones of his hand together.
Gwen
Gwen took a few deep breaths, her grip loosening around Mordred's hand.
"Ahhh... ow."
Mordred
Mordred kissed her forehead briefly.
"I love you."
Gwen
"Love you too..."
Gwen squeezed his hand tightly.
"OWWWWWWWWWWW!"
Mordred
Mordred let her squeeze his hand without attempting to move it.
Hank did...medical things. To help Gwen.
Gwen
"I'm... ow... voting... for... owwwww.... an epidural..."
Gwen squeezed Mordred's hand tighter.
Mordred
"Drugs can be...bad."
Mordred winced slightly as the bones of his hand ground against each other.
"The labour is progressing normally. If there was need for a C-section, then yes, I would give you an epidural. But everything's fine," Hank said.
Gwen
Gwen let out a moan of pain.
"Owwwie."
She looked down at Hank.
"I have an idea, let's leave them in there."
Hank
Hank chuckled slightly as he checked her blood pressure.
"Would you like a drink of water? This is going to take a few hours yet."
Gwen
"Hours?"
Gwen looked pitiful.
"How about some vodka?"
She winced.
"Alright, I'm kidding, geez, come out already!"
Hank
Hank smiled slightly.
"When you become fully dilated and enter the last stages of labour, we should start seeing some results."
Gwen
Gwen loosened her grip on Mordred's hand.
"Wanna swap places?"
Mordred
"Why, when you're doing so well, love?" Mordred asked.
Gwen
A few hours later, Gwen was back squeezing Mordred's hand hard enough to break it.
"Owwww!"
She was pushing, and taking those stupid calming breaths that don't really do much.
"Ahhhh God!"
Mordred
"Breathe, love, breathe," Mordred coaxed as he wiped the sweat from her forehead.
"I can see a head," Hank reported.
"Couple more big pushes now..."
Gwen
"Oh God, YOU PUSH!"
However, Gwen pushed and took deep breaths.
"AHHH!"
She pushed again.
Mordred
"Good girl," Hank said.
Mordred was looking a little white.
Gwen
Minutes later, the medlabs were filled with the loud sounds of a baby crying.
"Can't we just leave the other one in there?" Gwen asked tiredly, getting ready to push again.
Mordred
"Afraid not," Hank said as he got ready to catch the next one.
Mordred crooned to his son as he washed the child clean of blood. He wrapped the boy in a blanket.
"Such a fine boy..."
Gwen
Six minutes later, a second child's wailing filled the room.
Gwen closed her eyes briefly, breathing heavily.
"Ok... thank God I'm not having triplets."
Mordred
Hank chuckled briefly as he tied off the girl's umbilical cord and washed her clean.
Her outraged screams filled the room alongside her brother's.
Mordred took the baby from Hank and walked over to Gwen, carefully placed them in her arms.
Gwen
Gwen smiled tiredly at her children, then at Mordred.
"They're so beautiful," she said softly. "Looks like you got the girl you wanted."
Mordred
"Yeah..."
Mordred kissed her forehead as he looked at his children.
"Another set of twins in the family."
Hank started to clean up.
Gwen
"Yeah, I can blame you for that. Anyone else, might've just been one kid. But noooo."
Gwen closed her eyes and smiled.
"You know, it's something we never did... pick out names."
Mordred
"You did the work, you can name them," Mordred said, hand on her shoulder.
"Gwen, I love you so much..."
Gwen
"I love you too," Gwen said, giving Mordred a tired smile.
She returned her gaze to the children.
"Hmm... Bryant... and... Eavan."
Mordred
"They're lovely names," Mordred said.
Hank started to fill out the twins birth certificates.
He took all their measurements, then quickly returned them to the arms of their mother.
"Now, plenty of bed rest," he told Gwen.
"I'll make sure she gets it," Mordred answered.
Gwen
Gwen nodded.
"Do you want us to stay down here?"
She kissed the foreheads of her children.
Hank
"Overnight at least," Hank said.
"In the morning...well, we'll see."
Gwen
Gwen nodded and handed Bryant to Mordred, then looked closely at Eavan.
"Look at their eyes," she said quietly. "I'm hardly shocked. As if our kids could be any less than gorgeous."
Mordred
"Well, look at their parents," Mordred said.
"Hello, Bryant..." He kissed the boy's forehead.
Gwen
"Indeed. We're so gorgeous it would've been a crime not to have kids."
Gwen touched Eavan's cheek lovingly, and kissed her tiny nose.
"So beautiful."
Mordred
"How about...we get these two settled in their cribs, and you have a bath, and I watch them?" Mordred suggested.
Hank was setting up a new bed for Gwen, and two cribs for the babies.
Gwen
Gwen nodded and sat up.
An hour later, the babies were asleep, Gwen had bathed and was close to slumber herself.
It had been a long day.
