15 October 2003 - Finding A Replacement

AiMsTeR and Michelle

Walker

Walker made his way through the space station, to where he'd been told he could find Leroy Brown.

Many people greeted him along the way, and he stopped to talk to a few. Everything seemed to be coming along rather well.

He came to a door and hesitated, before knocking.

Leroy

Leroy was busy reading his weeky station status report when there was a knock on his door.

"Come in," he said, putting the report down.

Walker

Walker plastered a smile onto his face as he opened the door.

"Well, well... Leroy Brown. Long time no see," he began, "I trust everything on the station is in good order?"

Leroy

"Walker Hanson!" Leroy greeted, standing up. "This is a pleasent surprise. Please, have a seat. The station is fine, just fine. Running smoothly as always, and I'm delighted to say that the air is much fresher than what it used to be."

He grinned broadly.

"And how have you been?"

Walker

"Yes, I noticed that in the air. Quite delightful," Walker nodded, taking a seat.

"And... we've been managing. Di's been having a ahrd time, but we'll work through it. And kids will be kids. I trust you've seen Avery around... she's not giving Tanya any trouble, is she?"

Leroy

Leroy smiled.

"No, no. She's been very good. A credit to her family. And for Tanya's sake I'm quite grateful for that - she's been through a rough time lately," Leroy replied. "How are Isaac and Taylor? I last saw them a couple of weeks ago when they delivered the computer and server. It's proved rather valuable."

Walker

"Really?" Walker raised his eyebrows, sitting back, "that's great Leory. And they're getting on. Still on tour. They have a show tonight in Cincinnati. We've spent the last few days in Ohio."

He shrugged.

"It's good to have them back out on the road again, and they love it. But that's the main thing. And how is Tanya?"

Leroy

"She's in a bit of a turmoil at the moment," Leroy replied sadly. "After what happened with Christian... she's very worried about how her baby is going to grow up like. You heard she was pregnant, right? Other than the whole motherhood issue, she's mostly fine, though."

He leaned on the desk.

Walker

"Well I wish the best for her. Send her our regards."

He frowned slightly.

"I myself honestly thought that Mr. Thomas was beginning to take a turn for the good, after the initial fraud."

He rubbed his chin.

"But on another note... The council will soon be losing a member. I've taken it upon myself to find a replacement for him."

Leroy

Leroy raised his eyebrows.

"Oh really?" he inquired. "Who's leaving, if I may ask?"

Walker

Walker hesitated, tapping his heel on the floor.

"I am. But I'd thank you to keep it discreet. At least until I can find a replacement," he insisted.

"It is to my knowledge that family is more important than work, and there is an awful lot going on in my home at the moment that I'd rather keep an eye on than be bottled over with others' responsibilities."

Leroy

Leroy nodded.

"Of course. I agree completely. Why, I only ever became an agent so I could find my brother. Not sure what I would have done if I hadn't had that motivation - sure wasn't especially interested before Sam ran off. You can trust me to be discreet, Walker."

Walker

"And I believe I can," Walker smiled, "there are not many agents as trustworthy as yourself or Tanya."

He moved his chair forward, and leant on the desk.

"What I would like to dicuss with you, is your future career in the YIRAAS. As an agent."

Leroy

"There's always been such a... contention about that since the whole space station project started. I'm not interested in going back out on the field - I'd much rather stay here and manage my baby," Leroy grinned. "But that's the problem with being a top agent - getting and keeping a more adminstrative role is so difficult to accomplish. I can't continue on the field any more, my friend. I can't keep on aprehending criminals the rest of my life - no, we need to train new young agents and get them out there. I won't be around forever."

Walker

"I understand. And I do not blame Tanya for giving up her duties, especially with the baby on the way. If she had of remained on the force I would have talked with her myself about that particular issue."

He looked up at Leroy.

"As you are looking for a more... administrative role as you say, would you be interested in taking my place in the council?"

Leroy

Leroy's eyebrows went right up.

"Me?" He asked in surprise. "Well, I... I won't say no... but are you sure that I would be the right person to replace you?"

Walker

"You've helped Wayne and I before with security measures, and I can still do the scanning at events," Walker shrugged.

"Think about what I have to do. I won't expect a straight answer from you for now, because I know what I'm asking of you. My involvement in the council is simply to assign new members and have my say in events. Not to mention the security side of it, but that is simply plain English. However, I do understand it may put a lot of pressure on you, and now that you're starting a family... I'd understand if you turned me down."

Leroy

Leroy nodded slowly.

"Well, I will certainly greatly consider the matter, but I would say that the odds are in your favour that I will accept. You're certainly given me a lot to think about."

Walker

Walker sighed.

"I'm sorry for putting this onto you, but I know you can see where I'm coming from."

He chuckled slightly.

"The hard part will be telling Colin. I have my resignation ready to hand in... but I'd rather find a suitable replacement before I resign."

Leroy

"There's no need to appologise," Leroy assured him. "You would have had to ask someone, and I'm honoured you asked me. I'll let you know what I decide soon."

He leaned back in his chair.

"Yes... telling Colin... good luck with that."

Walker

Walker grinned.

"He's not going to let me live it down, that's for sure."

He scratched his nose.

"So how has Avery been, exactly?"

Leroy

"She seems to have settled in rather well - although I would wager she gets a little homesick sometimes. Tanya tells me her training - and schooling - are going well. If you want, we can head up to the school and check in on her?" Leroy suggested.

Walker

"I wouldn't want to disrupt the classes," Walker waved him off, "but be sure to mention I was here and checking up on her."

He smiled again and stood.

"I will await your answer, but for now I best get back to my boys. I think they have a soundcheck going on at the moment."

He checked his watch.

Leroy

"Sure, sure," Leroy nodded.

He stood up and held his hand out to Walker.

"It was a pleasure speaking to you again. Send my regards to your family."

Walker

Walker shook his hand.

"Of course. You do know my email address? Well, you have my phone number. Don't rush yourself unecessarily."

Leroy

Leroy smiled.

"I won't. Have a good trip back. I'll talk to you again soon."

Walker

Walker left the office and made his way back toward the teleportation devices.

Once back on Earth, he mentally crossed his fingers that Leroy would take his place. He was the best person Walker knew for the job.
