9 October 2003 - Sing Your Heart Out

Nessa and Tegan

Gwen and Bobby

Lorne walked through the doors of the school, to find Bobby waiting for him. It was pretty late, but it had been the only time Lorne could get out to New York.

"Ah, you'd be Lorne?" Bobby asked, rubbing the bump on the back of his head.

"What gave me away, the hair?" Lorne grinned, then his expression turned serious. "Where are they?"

"I don't know. Gwen knocked me out and then..."

"I'm back, no need to send out a search party." Gwen wheeled through the doors and looked bitter. "I just went for a wander. Play with my new toy."

"Hello sugar," Lorne said, patting her hair.

"Hi Lorne. What are you doing here?"

"Ah... well, I thought I might come see how you were doing. Where's Mordred?"

"Probably in our room, or with Vort. Or somewhere. I don't know."

"We'll try your room..."

Lorne followed as Gwen rolled her eyes and wheeled off in the direction of the room.

Bobby looked after them. "No, it's fine, my head doesn't hurt." He sighed and went to go get some food.

Lorne opened the door for Gwen and she wheeled in.

"Mordred, you in here? Something tells me we have a singing date."

Mordred and Faolan

"I'm here, love," Mordred said softly, standing up from where he'd been cradling Faolan with one hand.

The kitten took one look at Gwen and dove under the sheets, whimpering slightly at the pain that rolled off her.

"What singing date?"

Gwen and Bobby

Gwen gestured to Lorne.

"Ah, Bobby called. Nice fellow, said you could probably use my help?"

Gwen rolled her eyes.

"You know, you'd thinking knocking Bobby out would give him the hint that I don't need help. But apparently not. In any rate, I doubt this is going to help, unless you're hiding the answer to my paralysis under your coat."

Lorne sent some soothing waves her way. "Gwen..."

"Whatever. I'm not going first."

Lorne looked to Mordred. "Ok, sweetcheeks, looks like it's you and me. Do you want Gwen to stay for it?"

Mordred

"Ok..." Mordred lifted an eyebrow slightly.

"Everywhere someone's getting over
Everybody cries
And sometimes you can still lose
Even if you really try

Talking about the dream like the dream is over
Talk like that won't get you nowhere
Everyone's trusting in their heart
Like the heart don't lie..."

Gwen

Lorne yelped.

"I didn't think the singing was that bad," Gwen said dryly.

Lorne ignored her and looked at Mordred. "Honeybean, you've got to cut back on the blame." He closed his eyes and touched Mordred, sending happy waves through him. "You're hurting, pumpkin, but this isn't your fault. And," he lowered his voice. "She knows it's not. She knows you're here for her, and that's important, you have each other. You have friends and family around that love and support you. It's going to work out, sweets."

He looked to Gwen and she sighed. "Right."

She opened her mouth and started to sing.

"Wish I was too dead to cry
My self-affliction fades
Stones to throw at my creator
Masochists to which I cater
You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on,
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

Wish I was too dead to care
If indeed I cared at all
Never had a voice to protest
So you fed me shit to digest
I wish I had a reason;
my flaws are open season
For this, I gave up trying
One good turn deserves my dying

You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on,
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

Wish I'd died instead of lived
A zombie hides my face
Shell forgotten
with its memories
Diaries left
with cryptic entries

And you don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on,
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on:
I'll never live down my deceit..."

Lorne looked confused.

"Pain, pain, pain, you kids." He looked into Gwen's eyes. "You're going to... wait... I felt a reflection of Mordred's feelings, not yours. You can't be blocking me, can you?"

Mordred

Mordred squeezed Gwen's hand lightly. "So..." He looked at Lorne. "But you know I won't. Stop. Why can't you...read her? I thought..."

Gwen

"I thought too."

Lorne peered at Gwen and she sighed.

"See, I'm just a trouble maker."

"Could you... try again, sweetcheeks?"

Gwen shrugged and sang a verse again.

Lorne furrowed his brows. Well, the space where his eyebrows would've been. "Nothing. But... there's something there. Something blocking me. Unless it's me. Mordred, could you sing something for me again?"

Mordred

Mordred shrugged. "Ok, mate."

"Its alright to tell me,
what you think, about me,
I wont try, to argue,
or hold it, against you,
I know that, your leaving,
You must have, your reasons,
the season, is calling,
your pictures, are falling down..."

Gwen

Lorne frowned.

"I thought I told you no more blaming."

He looked confused.

"Well, it's not me... could you think of anything that would... perhaps be blocking me, Gwen? Mordred?"

Gwen shrugged.

"Maybe the accident screwed with my brain as well. I mean, it may as well have, it screwed with everything else. Sons of bitches."

Mordred

"Could be Fao," Mordred offered. "I'll take him out and let you try again." He went over to the bed and scooped his son into his arms. "Lorne. Faolan. My son. Who is cat shaped at the moment..."

Gwen

"Serafina's brother?"

Once Faolan was out of the room, Gwen sang again.

Nothing.

Lorne looked puzzled.

"Right, that's strange. I can't sense anything about you at all, love."

Gwen rolled her eyes.

"Well, I'm just perplexing all over, aren't I?"

Mordred

"But we love you that way," Mordred remarked, sticking his head back in. "Still a no go?"

Gwen

"Nothing... tell me, have you... apart from the accident... suffered anything traumatic lately?" Lorne asked carefully.

"Well, if you count being experimented on, going crazy, then being paralysed and in hospital when you're supposed to be on honeymoon... then yes. Lots of traumatic stuff here."

"Experimented on?"

"That's what I said, Greeny. And I'd rather not - "

"That may have something to do with this."

"Awesoooome," Gwen said.

Mordred

"I wish I could kill them again. Take my time about it." Mordred's eyes were ice. "Dr McCoy was looking at your bloodsamples...maybe he can figure something out?"

Gwen

"It could have something to do with it. Look, I'll head back to LA, but give me a bell when you know what's going on, and I'll take another look, ok?"

Lorne left the room quickly, knowing that the two needed to discuss what had happened eventually.

Gwen nodded tiredly.

"Yeah, it might help. God, I'm just a regular pain in everyone's ass."

Mordred

"I don't think so...and I'm sure Lorne doesn't either," Mordred said, sitting down on the bed, next to where she was in her wheelchair. "I love you, cariad. I could never think that about you."

Gwen

"Mordred... can I... I need sleep."

Gwen looked at him through tear filled eyes.

"Can you stay with me? I don't want to be alone anymore. I... I'm too scared of what I might do," she said honestly.

Mordred

"I'll always stay with you, love," Mordred said, kissing her forehead. "I'll try that trick again..." He 'ported her onto the bed, and then took his boots off and got in beside her. "Better?"

Gwen

Gwen pulled her gloves off and draped them over her chair. She was able to control her powers with him. He made her safe. He wasn't going to hurt her.

"Yes, thank you."

She took his hand and entwined their fingers, and closed her eyes.

Mordred

Mordred squeezed her hand comfortingly. "Always yours, cariad. And you're mine. I love you." He leaned over to kiss her forehead, and closed his own eyes. Feeling exhausted all of a sudden.

Gwen

Gwen smiled slightly.

"I love you too."

She lay awake for a few moments, then drifted off to sleep.
