Priss

Priss sighed and stroke the fur of the one kitten Nyx had managed to save.

She purred slightly and turned over on her belly to let her half- sister pet her.

Faint traces of scars showed through the plushy black fur, shining like silver trails of stars in the night sky.

Her own child moved within her lazily and Priss sighed again.

She still hadn't been able to save that eye. One of the kitten's eyes was a blank patch of skin, scarred all over.

Sometimes Priss wondered if it would have been kinder to let the kitten die.

The cat in her told her to take the kitten and kill it, because it was weak. Took food from the mouth of those who were strong. A burden. A nuisance. Not worth keeping.

The human in her, and what she'd learned through tears and struggle to become told her to cherish the kitten. Not let anything harm her. Care for her. Make sure that she had as happy a life as possible.

She didn't even know what the kitten looked like as a human. If indeed, she had a human form. She smelt all beast and magic wound around and over her.

"Meretseger..." Priss whispered the name of the kitten. She Who Loves Silence.

The kitten purred silently, rubbing her head against Priss's fingers.
