6 October 2003 - Did I do something wrong?

Michelle

Tanya and Leroy

Leroy flung open the door. Tanya looked up, eyebrows raised.

"Well," she said. "I feel a storm is coming."

"You quit?" he exclaimed.

"Yes I did."

"Why?"

"I would have thought that was obvious."

"Tanya -"

"Obviously my judgement can no longer be trusted, Leroy. First Spook and now..." Tanya nearly choked on the tears that started to form, "now Christian? I vouch for them, Leroy! And look what they're doing..."

"Tanya -"

"I know what the reports say. One of my friends rang me and told me herself before they were even written. If I hadn't quite, Wayne would have asked for my resignantion."

"Tanya, Wayne would not have done that."

"Really? I'm not entirely convinced," then her tone went sarcastic. "But maybe that just proves it. My judgement is impaired."

"You've been one of the top agents -"

"Key word. Been. Maybe I've reached my peak, Leroy. Maybe I'm just no good as an agent any more."

Leroy sighed, and sat down beside her. Tanya put her hand to his cheek.

"Better this way," she said quietly. "I've needed some downtime for a while. I can concentrate on purely telepathic matters now."

Leroy closed his hand over hers.

"I would hate to think that you're throwing away everything that you've worked for over that boy."

"That boy?" Tanya repeated. "Christian has meant a great deal to me over the last few years, Leroy. A great deal."

The tears started pouring down and Leroy put his arms around her.

"Did I do something wrong?"

"No, no," Leroy said quietly. "No, you didn't do anything wrong. Craig just had more time to be an influence on him."

"Maybe I... should have... been there... for him more. Maybe -"

"Now there's no point in torturing yourself with maybes. You were there for him as much as you could. Heck I even remember a few times where you compromised missions just to be there for him. It's not your fault. He grew up in a bad crowd. He's always been around those kinds of people, Tanya. Always. You did your best. It's not your fault he's gone that way now."

"I should... I should have... taken him from... Craig the moment... I knew..."

"And blown your cover."

"I could have -"

"I'm not going to let you blame yourself, Tanya. Did you ever stop to consider that your influence was what stopped him from going this way sooner?"

Tanya was silent.

"I didn't think so," Leroy replied, giving her a hug. "Come on. Dry your eyes, and let's go out. I bet I can find something to cheer you up. Chocolate ice cream maybe. Mmm..."

Tanya choked out a small giggle.

"See?" Leroy grinned. "I'm working my magic already."
