15 January 2003 - Runaway

Miette/Oliver

Oliver barged into Miette's room. She looked up at him in annoyance.

"How many times -"

"Uncle Leroy is leaving."

Miette pursed her lips.

"You know how dad treated him. Are you so surprised?"

"Am I surprised? Mi, we didn't even know his name until two days ago! And now Dad's kicking him out. Just because he wants to be human -"

"This might come as a complete surprise to you, but you are human."

"Only half of me. Dad never tells us about the other half. He never tells us a single blasted thing!"

A pile of paper on Miette's desk went up in flames.

"Oliver!" she yelped, dousing the fire. "Ooh! It's a good thing for you that was blank paper. What if it had been my notes?"

"See? See! Maybe if Dad had ever bothered to teach us anything, I wouldn't have this problem," Oliver scrowled. "And don't you tell me you've never wanted to meet other aliens. I bet you haven't even told Dad about AJ."

Miette didn't answer.

"I didn't think so."

"Look, there's nothing we can do about it," Miette said. "Uncle Leroy is going. You're just going to have to deal with that. Besides, I'm too overwhelmed with college right now to even think about this kind of stuff."

Oliver gave her a dark look.

"Fine," he said and stormed off.

Miette bit her lip. She had a feeling this was not going to be the end of it.

Oliver/Leroy

Leroy pulled over to the side of the road. He stepped out of the car and opened up the back door. He moved some of this things around.

"Oliver," he said.

"I'm not going home. You can't make me."

"So, you thought you'd just run away."

"I had to."

"You refuse to listen to your father's wishes."

"He was being stupid and unfair."

"And yet, he did the exact same thing and thought the exact same way when he was not much older than you."

Oliver glared.

"Except he knew how to use his powers!"

"Ahh."

"Uncle Leroy, please, you gotta help me. I have a tendancy to set things on fire when I get mad. I don't do it on purpose! It just happens. And there's... other stuff too. But that's the main thing."

Leroy frowned.

"You were having problems controlling your powers and Sam never helped you work through them?"

"No, never."

"This is more serious than I thought. I knew he had vowed never to use his powers again, but not even... oh this is very serious indeed."

There was quiet for a moment.

"Does that mean you'll help me?"

Leroy didn't answer for a moment, then he pulled him out of the car.

"You'll be much more comfortable in the front seat. And, yes Oliver, I will help you."

Oliver was all smiles. They got back into the car and started off again.

"What about Miette?"

"Miette doesn't have any problems. In fact she uses her powers to dye her hair all the time."

Leroy raised an eyebrow.

"And what does Sam think?"

"He doesn't know. He thinks she uses hair dye. But I know, and Mum know, adn we all know the truth," Oliver paused. "She even has an alien friend. Her name's AJ and she lives in Australia. She's sort of my friend too, I guess. We've spoken to each other a couple of times."

"Hmm. Do you know if she's interested in meeting other aliens and learning to use her powers too?"

Oliver shrugged.

"She always wanted to meet other aliens. But she's more interested in college than aliens."

"Nothing wrong with that," Leroy smiled. "It's unlikely that any of us will ever see our home planet again, so she may as well continue her human life. But the door will always be open to her. As it still is to her father."

Oliver nodded.

IM - Miette and Isaac

I have not yet begun to procrastinate: Hey beautiful
BeamOfLight: Hey snookums
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: What's new pussy cat?
BeamOfLight: Not a huge lot
BeamOfLight: Oh, no well, that's not true
I have not yet begun to procrastinate:Oh?
BeamOfLight: One of my Dad's brothers showed up the other day
BeamOfLight: Dad hasn't seen any of his rels since he ran away from home
BeamOfLight: Since before he was married.
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: That's a long time.
BeamOfLight: Yeah
BeamOfLight: And then they had a fight
BeamOfLight: And Dad kicked him out
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: Ouch
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: I guess bygones are not bygones
BeamOfLight: You'd think after so many years they wouldn't fight
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: You would, huh?
BeamOfLight: And... I smell a rat
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: Really? I've never smelt a rat before
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: What do they smell like
BeamOfLight: Very funny
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: Lol, sorry
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: Pray, continue
BeamOfLight: At any rate, I don't think we've seen the last of Uncle Leroy
BeamOfLight: I mean, you don't spend that many years looking for someone only to leave two days after you've found them.
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: True.
BeamOfLight: And there's something else
BeamOfLight: My brother has run away with him
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: Your brother has run away with your uncle?
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: Eww!
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: :-p
BeamOfLight: Very funny
BeamOfLight: Not like that, and you know it
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: Hee hee
BeamOfLight: We found a note on the kitchen table a little eariler
BeamOfLight: Dad is furious
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: I think I'd be mad too if my son ran off with my long lost brother
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: I think, I don't know
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: I don't have a son, so I can't be sure
BeamOfLight: I'm trying to talk to you about something serious and you keep cracking jokes!
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: Sorry
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: Shall I send you some virtual flowers as a peace offering?
BeamOfLight: You don't need to send me a peace offering
BeamOfLight: An appology is enough, if you continue to be considerate
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: Okay, I'll stop making jokes
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: at least for now
BeamOfLight: Thanks
BeamOfLight: *sigh* I just don't know what to do
BeamOfLight: And Dad's like, looking at me as if he expects me to run off too!
BeamOfLight: He think I had something to do with it all, like I knew what Oliver was going to do or something
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: Wow
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: I don't know what to suggest
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: I sure hope that everything works out
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: And if I can do anything to help, all you have to do is ask
BeamOfLight: Thanks
BeamOfLight: I really appreciate that
I have not yet begun to procrastinate: What are friends for?
BeamOfLight: :)
