14 January 2003 - Meet the parents

Isaac

At about 8:15 that night, Isaac knocked on the front door of Ashley's house. This was it, the big 'meet the parents' dinner. He hoped they wouldn't expect a lot of these last minute deals. He shifted his weight from one leg to the other as he waited for the door to open.

Ashley

Ashley heard the door open and went to get it. "Hi Ike.Come in."She said as she grabbed his hand.

Isaac

Isaac followed Ashley down a hallway and into the dining room. The table was beginning to fill up with food (which smelled oh so delicious). Through a nearby door, Isaac could see someone watching the TV.

Ashley

"Come here I"ll introduce you to my father." Ashley said.

Isaac

"Okay," he agreed.

Isaac walked with Ashley into the TV room.

Ashley

When they got in the living room Ashley's dad looked at Ike. "You must be the boy my daughter keeps talking about." Ashley blushed a little.

Isaac

Isaac stuck out his hand.

"Isaac Hanson," he said.

Ashley

"Dale Robinson." He said and shook Ike's hand. "Why don't you sit down."

Isaac

"Thanks," Isaac replied.

He sat down next to Ashley.

Ashley

Ashley sat on the couch next to Issac. She hoped to god her parents didn't embarass her tonight

Isaac

After talking a little with Ashley's dad, her mother appeared to say that dinner was ready, and so they all trooped into the dining room.

Ashley

In the dining room Ashley sat next to her mother. She noticed her mother had made her famous Pumpkin Soup Cake. She felt like barfing.

Isaac

"It all smells really great," Isaac said to Ashley's mother. "Do you people say grace? I do. I hope you don't mind."

Ashley

"No we don't mind because we say grace too." Ashley's mother replied. Ashley sat there watching so far everything was okay.

Isaac

"Great," Isaac said. "Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for this food we are about to eat, and bless the hands that have prepared it for us. Amen."

And on that note, they all dug in.

"So, Isaac, what do you do for a living?"

"I'm a musician. I'm in a band called Hanson."

"I see. What about education?"

"I was homeschooled, but of course, I've finished high school now. I'm doing a correspondance course at the moment."

"What in?"

"Business."

Ashley

Ashley sat at the table stunned. Her parents actually having a conversation without mentioning UFO's.But then she heard the dreaded UFO speech start.

"So Isaac You believe in UFO'S?" Dale asked.

Isaac

Isaac considered his answer for a moment.

"Well, I don't not believe in them," he said. "I believe aliens are real but if they've ever visited Earth, I don't know."

Ashley

"Well I"ve saw one.It wasn't long after the crash in Roswell."Dale said as he looked at Ike.

Isaac

"Really?" asked Isaac.

Isaac figured this was going to be fun. He always found it amusing talking to some of these alien-obsessed humans.

Ashley

"Yes.I was 12 at the time." Dale said as he remembered the night.Ashley just shot Ike a I'm sorry he is saying this glance. She knew it probably was hard for Ike to hear someone talk about aliens and him being one."My brother was with me.He later became an alien hunter and got himself killed." Dale said.

Isaac

"Wow. How'd the alien kill him?" Isaac asked, his eyes glittering. "Did he do some weird alien thing like suck out his life force?"

Ashley

"Nope. He shot him.My brother killed his girlfriend. So the alien got mad and shot him."Dale answered.

Isaac

Isaac had to make a point of not letting his feelings show. All this time... it was Ashley's uncle who had killed Myra? And now her father was on his case?

"Shot him? Well, that's kinda mundane isn't it?" Isaac replied. "Gee, I mean, if I were an alien, and I had some cool powers, I'd think I'd rather kill him off in some spectacular way. Hmm... then again... I suppose if I were an alien on earth, I might kill someone a normal way after all... especially if I wanted to keep other alien hunters off my trail. Your bro killed his girlfriend, you say... was she an alien too?"

Ashley

Ashley couldn't believe what she just found out.She knew now that her uncle was a very mean man.

"No she wasn't."Dale answered.

Isaac

"Wow, imagine what would have happened if she and the alien had gotten together. Do you think they would have been biologically compatible? What if they had had kids? Do you suppose the little things would have been teased at school for having antenae? Or did the aliens have antenae after all?" Isaac mused, falling back into his usual 'humour-the-human' routeen to hide the fury that was building up inside.

Ashley

"Listen Ike will you come with me for a minute?'" Ashley said as she got up from the table and grabbed Ike by the hand.

Isaac

"Uhh, sure," Isaac said to her. "Excuse me."

And Isaac followed Ashley out of the room.

Ashley

"Ike I'm really sorry.I didn't know what my uncle did." Ashley said as she hugged him.

Isaac

"That's fine," Isaac replied, hugging her back. "But perhaps it would be safer for the both of us if we pretended not to know whta he was talking about."

Ashley

"Yeah I guess we probably could.Ike what would happen if a human and an alien had a baby?" Ashley asked as she looked down.

Isaac

Isaac looked nervously towards the kitchen.

"I don't think this is the right place to talk about aliens somehow."

Ashley

I don't care if it's the right place or not.I want to know," Ashley demanded.

Isaac

"Keep your voice down," Isaac hissed. "A human/alien relationship can work out fine, including children. And I know a number of, and am friends with hybrids. Sometimes they get powers, sometimes they don't. Now, please, I'd rather not discuss this here and now okay? We can make a date and I'll tell you everything you want to know then."
