Chapter 1

Daria woke up with a terrible headache. And a nasty bump.

She got up, stretched, and started walking through the house.

"Auntie Erin? Uncle Harry?" she called.

But there was no reply, except for Toby running to her feet. Then Daria, after wondering why the house was such a mess, remembered the tornado, and started outside to see if they were still in the cellar.

She opened the front door, and her eyes widened in amazement.

"Oh my gosh... I don't think we're in Kansas any more Toby."

Daria stepped outside and looked around. There were quaint little houses, brightly painted roads and beautiful plants all around her.

It was breath taking.

"Hello?" she called, for surely there must be people living in such a beautiful place.

And again, there was no reply. Just as Daria was beginning to feel truly alone, she saw a brilliant sphere of light growing, and growing, right before her eyes. Then it disappeared, and in its place was a most beautiful woman with golden flowing hair and a silver wand.

"Are you a good witch or a bad witch?" the woman asked.

Daria was a little startled at the question and couldn't answer. The woman waited for a moment, studying Daria, the repeated the question.

"I, I'm not a witch at all."

"Oh? Well, I'm Gretchen the Good Witch of the South, and the Munchkins asked me to find out if the witch who killed the Wicked Witch of the East is good or wicked."

"But I told you, I'm not a witch at all! And who are the Munchkins?"

"Why, they're the people who live here." Gretchen replied. "And they will be most grateful to you for releasing them from their slavery under the rule of the Wicked Witch of the East."

"I didn't mean to kill anyone." Daria said. "Are you sure?"

"Certainly. There she is."

Daria looked to where Gretchen was point. And sure enough, sticking out from under the farm house were two legs from the knee down. Daria gasped.

"Tell me, what is your name?"

"I'm Daria. And I'm really very, very sorry. There was a tornado, and it must have blown my house here - wherever here is - from Kansas. Oh, do you suppose I could get home?"

"Here is Munchkin Land." Gretchen informed her, then, turning her attention to their surroundings. "You can come out Munchkins! This is Daria, and she says she's not a witch at all."

Slowly, softly, people about half Daria's size started creeping out of the houses and the gardens and generally from every direction. The crowd grew and with them so did their excitement. A few minutes later, a rather fat Munchkin stepped through the crowd.

"On behalf of all the Munchkins of Munchkin Land," he said, "I welcome you to Munchkin Land."

"Oh! Oh well, thank you!" then Daria turned to Gretchen. "But please, I'd rather go back home, to Kansas. Auntie Erin and Uncle Harry must be really worried about me."

"Hmm, I believe the only one who can help you with that is the Great Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City."
