Chapter 4

After awhile people started moving away from the grave. Some time after the end of the funeral, when most everyone was headed to the Wake, Isaac spotted Mel still crouched at the grave.

"I'll be back in a second." He told Zac, and walked over.

For a few moments Isaac and Mel said nothing to each other.

"Are you ok?" Isaac asked quietly. "Or is that a stupid question?"

Mel didn't reply for so long that Isaac wondered if she had heard him.

"I miss him so much already." She said at last.

Isaac tentatively put his arm around her. For a while no one said anything.

"So, umm, are... are you planning on staying here all day?" Isaac asked.

"No, I... I suppose I should be going huh? You probably think I'm being stupid huh?" Mel replied, standing up.

"Stupid? No, I've never known you to do something stupid." He returned seriously. "I... I'm sure everything is going to work out for you."

"Thank you." She whispered.

"You're always welcome." Isaac paused. "Did you want to take a lift with us?"

"Uhh, yeah sure. Thanks."

They started walking towards the car. Suddenly Mel stopped short.

"Mel?"

"Ike, I... I have to tell you something."

"Sure."

"I haven't told anyone this. Please, please, please don't tell anyone else. I just, I just have to tell someone."

"I promise I won't tell another living soul."

She was silent for a moment, then took a deep breath.

"I'm three months pregnant."

"You are? Well, that's good news! Congratulations."

"Thanks. I just, y'know... I returned from the doctor with this great news and then I, I, I..." Mel burst into tears.

"You got the phone call about David." Isaac realised, comforting her.

Mel gave a small nod.

"Look, Mel, if you ever, ever need help with anything, all you have to do is ask ok?"

"Thank you."

On that, Isaac and Mel joined up with Isaac's family and headed to the place where they were holding the Wake.
