Chapter 38

Taylor had made a decision, based on what Moira said in her most recent e-mail. And now, here he was, standing outside a door he hadn't stood in front of for a long time, and never thought he would again.

He knocked nervously.

"Taylor! My it's been a long time since I last saw you." Said the woman who answered it.

"Hi Mrs Jackson. Is Wendy here?"

"Sure. You know where her room is."

"Thanks."

Taylor walked to Wendy's room, and then, after taking a few deep breaths to calm his nerves, knocked.

"Come in." she called.

Taylor opened the door and stepped in.

"Taylor?" she gaped.

"Hi Wendy." He said softly.

"I, I... what are you doing here?"

"I had to see you again."

The two stared into each other's eyes for a moment.

"So, umm, do you really hate me?"

Wendy was silent for a moment. Then she lets out a breath and shook her head.

"I'm sorry I said that Tay."

"What about, what about..."

"The baby? I put her up for adoption."

"You what? Why... I could have... you didn't..."

"Tay, there's no way I could have possibly taken care of a baby." She bit her lip for a moment and sighed. "Besides, it, I, Tay, you weren't the father."

Taylor stared.

"I, I wasn't? Then who? How? Why?"

Wendy looked like she was going to cry.

"I don't know Tay. I don't know who the father is, but it's not yours. The timing is wrong."

Taylor sat down hard on the floor.

"You... you cheated on me?"

"Well... I mean... that depends on what you call cheating..."

"It depends?" Taylor repeated. "It sure sounds like cheating to me."

"Taylor I... you never met my sister, but she was in a car accident some years ago. She had to live in the hospital, and the bills were... I... Tay... I became a prostitute."

Taylor stared.

"A, a what?"

"A prostitute. A hooker. A whore. You happy now? I needed the money to look after my sister ok? You may not have noticed how poor my Mom and I are."

"You should have said something to me! I would have helped."

"Taylor I... I couldn't do that to you. You were besotted with me. You had me on a pedestal so high, I got dizzy from the height. I'm not any kind of angel."

"You were to me. That was all that mattered."

There was quiet for a moment.

"Is your sister ok?"

"She... she died two months ago."

"Oh man, I'm so sorry."
