Chapter 14

The Narrator

"Someone who should have fired Captain Hanson. He spoiled the whole story by telling you about me."

They all stare at each other.

"So... there is a story line department?" asks Taylor in awe.

"No. But it's a close enough description. Just call me The Narrator. Now, if you don't mind, I have a story to tell. So kindly keep your mouth shut, Zac, and quit spoiling it by your incessant yelling."

"No! I want you to get us home, and I want -" Zac begins.

"To get home now. I know kiddly-winks. I know."

"So, get us home."

"Now where would be the fun in that?"

"More fun that being lost in the freaking forest."

"Maybe for you."

"Has it occurred to you guys that we are arguing with The Narrator?" Isaac asks.

"Either that or we're dreaming," Taylor adds. "Or maybe we're all under the influence of some hallucinating drug."

"I don't care! I don't care!" Zac exclaims. "Home! Now!"

"Why should I?"

"Because I said!"

"Hmm..."

"Would, would it be so much trouble?" Taylor asks tentatively. "I mean, we just wanna get on with our lives."

"And I want to change the tense from present back to past."

"Umm... right."

There is a long pause.

"Ok... I'll send you 'home'."

"Do you think she's sounding smug?" asks Zac suspiciously. "I think she's sounding smug."

"Never satisfied, are we Zac? Just follow that path."

"What path?" they all ask.

"That one."

And just behind Fred a path appears out of thin air.

"Whoo hoo!" Zac cries triumphantly and starts bounding down it.

Isaac and Taylor follow. Fred glances up at the sky briefly.

"Go on Fred. You're the star of this story."

Fred smiles.

"Thanks."

And on that, Fred starts walking down the path too.
