The phone rang at one point, and Babsie - who it was usually for - picked it up.
"Hello?"
"Umm, Hi? Babsie?"
"Kel? That you?"
"Yep. Like, who else?"
"Who else indeed! What's up girl?"
"Oh, well, umm…. I'm kinda like, in a bit of trouble."
"Oh?"
"I, ahh, I've been arrested."
"Arrested? You? Whatever for?"
"Well, ahh, a couple of the guys in our like, tour are umm, well… they've been like, stealing cars. Anyway they, like, got caught and they were chased back to our camp by the cops. And the cops weren't sure who they were so like, they took us all in for questioning."
"Go on."
"Ok, well, at first I thought they were gonna let me go, but then like, someone, and I don't know who, but someone in on the scam told the cops that we were all in on it. Including me. And … and…"
"Kel are you crying?"
"It's not fair! I swear I wasn't in on it! I promise! And I didn't know who else to call and…"
"It's ok Kel. Really. I believe you." Babsie assured her. "Is there anything you want me to do for you?"
"A, a lawyer would be good. The guys all wanna like, get the same one to represent us, but I don't really want to."
"I understand. No worries. I can do that. Just let me know where you are and all them details."
Kelsey wasn't sure of the details so she passed the phone over to a waiting policewoman, who told Babsie what she needed to know. Then the policewoman passed the phone back to Kelsey.
"I, I need to go now." Kelsey told her.
"Yeah, ok. Look, cheer up ok? Everything's going to work out. I mean it."
"Thank you."
A moment later, Kelsey hung up. The policewoman was about to lead her back down to her cell, when Kelsey looked at her with pleading eyes.
"Please… let me have some dignity. Just, just let me wash my face before you take me back down there."
