Chapter 43

"Excuse me? Aren't I the guitarist in this band?"

"Oh c'mon, Sarah, anyone can see that -"

"Because last time I checked, I was."

"Look, all, I'm saying is that -"

"You're just being bossy."

"You're just being stubborn."

"You're a meanie."

"You're a pea-brain."

"You're both being pathetic." Mackie cut in.

"Oh c'mon Mackie, you know I'm right." Zoe replied. "That's not how -"

"Quit ordering me around! You're not Mom!"

There was a tense silence. Mackie rubbed at his temples.

"Just quit fighting ok?" he sighed. "Look, Zoe, sometimes the guitar parts you write are a little too complicated for her right n-"

"I can teach he-"

"That's not the point. Some people just don't pick up on things as well as you do ok? Let her learn at her own pace. I'm sure Sarah will get the hang of that rift eventually."

Zoe, sat on her chair, crossed her arms and glared at them.

"In the meantime," Mackie continued, "Sarah can do an easier rift for that song. It's not that drastic Zoe."

"Thank you Mackie." Sarah said softly.

Mackie smiled at her, then glanced at Zoe and sighed. Zoe had been rather hard to get along with ever since the tornado.

"C'mon, let's get back to recording ok?" he continued.

"Ok." Sarah answered.

"And since you guys obviously don't need me right now, I'm going. I'll be back later." On that, Zoe stood up and flounced out of the room.

Mackie and Sarah looked at each other.

Zoe had originally intended on going for a walk, but she could feel tears pricking at her eyes and couldn't face it. So she picked up the book she was reading and was just settling down, when she read the first line.

Her eyes flicked up from the book to the keyboard in front of her. Somehow the line she had just read and the conversation she just had seemed to mutate and transform into a song she just couldn't get out of her head.

She sat down that the keyboard and began to play.
