Chapter 34

Taylor had been a little worried lately. He had heard from his friend back in Tulsa that Marty had woken up from his coma. In fact, they were planning on sending him home sometime in the next couple of days. He was so caught up in his worries that when he turned on the tv in the hotel room, he didn't even register what they were talking about.

Until the word 'Tulsa' was mentioned.

"Oh. My. Gosh." He gasped, forgetting his worries. "Oh. My. Gosh. Oh. My. Gosh."

Obviously, he didn't know what else to say.

"Oh. My. Gosh."

See what I mean?

"Tay?" Rita asked, walking in with a tired Charlotte.

"Oh. My. Gosh."

A little confused at this lack of response, not to mention lack of vocabulary, Rita glanced at the screen.

"Oh my gosh!"

Maybe it's infectious.

"What's with the 'oh my gosh' ing?" Babsie asked, overhearing the, uhh, 'oh my gosh' ing.

She looked at the tv, and her eyes grew wide.

"Damn, that's not good. Say, isn't that near our neighbourhood?"

Ok, maybe it's not infectious. Taylor nodded grimly.

"I sure hope everyone's ok." Babsie continued. "I'd better go tell Ike and Zac."

Babsie left Taylor and Rita to continue staring at the tv in total shock and saying 'oh my gosh'.

Some time later, Isaac's phone rang.

"Hello? Dad?" he asked.

"Uhh, no… this is Mackie. I, uhh, I take it he hasn't called."

"No, no… why? Where are you? Are you ok? What about -"

"I'm at Auntie Helen's with Sarah and Zoe. I, I don't know where Mom and Dad and Yassie are… they were in the house when the tornado hit. Zoe and Sarah and I were at your house. Your - your part of the street was hardly touch but… but…" Mackie sounded really upset.

"What is it Mackie?"

"Ike, Our part, the part where we live and Tay and Rita and Zac live? That part of the street… there's… it's all rubble. I, I, I'm afraid they might be… oh, man…"

But Mackie didn't need to say it. He couldn't bear to say it even if he did. There was a worried, miserable silence.

"Zoe and Sarah are ok aren't they?" Isaac asked finally.

Mackie nodded, then realised that Isaac couldn't see him.

"Yeah, yeah, they're fine. Definitely upset."

"Did, umm, did you want to talk to anyone else? Did they want to talk to someone?"

"No… no… I was just calling to make sure you knew we were ok… and in case you heard from Dad… umm, I guess I'll let you know if I hear anything."

"And I you."

"Yeah, umm, see ya later."

"See ya."

Isaac hung up the phone, trying hard not to cry.
