Chapter 85

"I wonder where Babsie is." Rita said. "She's been gone for ages."

"Yeah. I wonder what they fought about?" Taylor added.

"Maybe we should go look for her." Zac suggested.

"I'm going for a walk." Isaac called to them.

They heard the door close.

"Well, at least he's out of his room." Taylor commented.

Isaac dawdled down the street. He had no idea where he was going or what he was doing.

Why had he yelled at her like that? He knew she was right. He'd always known she was right. So why did he fight her? Why did he fight the truth?

Isaac sighed. Why was it he always had such bad relationships with women? His first girlfriend dumps him, on Valentines Day of all days. His second girlfriend committed suicide, and all the girls he dated in between were not worth wasting breath talking about.

Oh, Candice. Isaac beat himself up about her. If only his phone had been on. If only he'd gotten there sooner. If only he had realised there was something wrong. Was he always so blind?

Isaac found himself snickering. Once again he was proving Babsie right. Here he was, beating himself up over things he could change and didn't have much if any control over in the first place.

He looked around. Yep, he was well and truly lost. He was gonna have a time finding his way home again he was certain.

Then he heard a noise. Struggling noises, and someone crying out, coming from an alley. Isaac knew he was putting himself in a potentially dangerous situation, but he couldn't just walk away. He turned into the alley.

"Hey, leave her alone!" he exclaimed.

He didn't know who she was, but he did know that what these two guys had been doing was raping her.

"Rack off buddy. This is our chick."

"Yeah, but hey, you can have a go later."

"My friend is calling the cops right now." Isaac lied. "You better run if you wanna save your butts."

They paused.

"You're lying."

"Am I?"

The thing with Isaac is that for all his romantic and goofy qualities, he also has that whole when-I'm-being-serious-do-what-I-say-if-you-know-what's-good-for-you thing going. The two rapists ran.

Isaac breathed a sigh of relief and knelt beside the girl. It was dark, but he knew she had been badly beaten. Right now she was unconscious.

He fetched his phone out of his pocket, and moved away so that he could figure out what street he was on so the ambulance knew where to arrive. Then he sat back with her moving to and from the street and the girl so that he could show them where she was when they arrived.

When the ambulance finally did, the officers moved her onto a stretcher. As soon as they moved into the light, Isaac nearly collapsed in shock.

It was Babsie.
