Sarah and Maire were talking on the phone.
“Oh, just a sec, Marie,” Sarah said at one point. “Elijah’s crying.”
“Okay.”
Marie watched and waiting patiently while her aunt retrieved her cousin.
“He sure can cry, can’t he?” she observed as Sarah sat down in front of the monitor again.
“No kidding,” Sarah replied, settling about feeding her two-month old baby.
Marie sat there quietly for a moment.
“Something wrong?” Sarah asked, noticing her discomfort.
Marie burst into tears.
“I found out something horrible yesterday!”
“What?” she asked, immediately concerned.
“I’m pregnant.”
“Pregnant? Since when… how… Marie…” Sarah was confused. “I’d say congratulations but…”
“How can I have a child now? I’ve still got this last year of college to do! I was going to wait at least a couple more years…”
“Oh, I see. Marie, I… I’m sure everything is going to work out fine.”
“Oh sure.”
“Marie. What does Mick think?”
“I haven’t told him.”
“What? Why not?”
“Because -”
“No, wait,” Sarah interrupted. “I changed my mind. I don’t want to hear it. But he deserves to know. You should tell him. Right now.”
“But Sarah -”
“Listen, this time next year, you’ll have a completely different opinion. You’re going to love that little baby and you’ll be disgusted with yourself for ever thinking otherwise.”
“I doubt it.”
“Doubt it all you want. But you’ll see I’m right.”
Marie was not convinced. After the girls hung up, Sarah decided to take matters into her own hands and ring their rels with the news, and the information that Marie wasn’t very happy about it. There were certain members of this family Sarah knew would not let Marie get far with that attitude!
