Chapter 73

August 2023

Taylor returned home to find Rita in tears.

"Rita?"

He only got sobs as reply. Taylor sat down next to her and put his arm around her.

"Honey? What's wrong?"

It took a few minutes, but at last it came out: her father had suffered a major heart attack and died.

Rita hugged Mary.

"You know, I fought with him again the night before he died," Mary cried. "I mean, if I knew... if I thought..."

"We can't know these things - "

"I can't even remember the last time I told him I loved him. We stopped getting along but he was still my dad -"

"I can't remember the last time either."

They were at the wake, some days later. Rita, Taylor and all their kids in Tulsa had flown down for the funeral.

"Babsie didn't come?" Mrs Masters asked Rita.

Rita shook her head.

"She's a busy person. And I think she said something about Dad not being worthy of her presence."

Mrs Masters made a disapproving sound.

"That girl has no respect."

"No, she just sometimes hold grudges for longer than she should. Well, we shouldn't hold grudges at all, but you know what I mean."

There was silence for a moment.

"So, what are you going to do now?"

Mrs Masters sighed, them smiled.

"I think I'm going to retire. Kevin and Suzie had all but taken over the club anyway."

Rita smiled.

"Perhaps, perhaps one day I will visit you and Taylor, and my grandchildren in America."

"That would be wonderful."

Mother and daughter smiled at each other.
