“Nice catch,” Adam commented. “Where’d it come from?”
Xavier looked up and pointed.
“Well, that’s the direction it fell.”
“What’s in it?”
“Whatever it is, I bet it’s not shoes.”
Xavier clambered out of the wardrobe and put the box on the bed. He lifted them lid and Adam gave a low whistle.
“We’d better show this to Uncle Zac,” Adam commented gravely.
Xavier nodded.
When the two came down the stairs, Kelsey saw the looks on their faces and immediately did a double take.
“I’m always worried when you two look serious – especially you Xavier.”
Kelsey only got a little more worried when he didn’t grin back.
“What is it boys?” Zac asked, looking up from the computer.
“We found this in the wardrobe. Oh, actually it found us...” Xavier replied, giving him the box.
Zac opened the box and became alarmed.
“Kel? You’d better look at this.”
Kelsey walked over. He eyes widened.
“Oh heck, where’d they come from?”
“Yes... where did they come from?” Zac asked Adam and Xavier. “You haven’t taken any have you.”
“No!” Adam exclaimed.
“Hey the box fell into my lap when I fell in the wardrobe,” Xavier defended. “We’re not taking drugs. Where would we get them from?”
Zac managed a smile.
“Oh, you know I had to ask,” he paused. “You’re in Zoe’s room aren’t you?”
Adam and Xavier looked at each other and shrugged, but Kelsey nodded. Sighing, Zac picked up the phone and dialed Zoe’s number, hoping she’d pick up.
“Hello?” came her voice, yawning.
“Zoe? It’s Zac. Please don’t hate me for asking this, but are you doing drugs?”
There was silence on the other end.
“No,” she answered coldly. “No I’m not. And I can’t believe you would even think that I would.”
Without another word she hung up. Zac winced.
“She hates you, huh?” Kelsey asked.
Zac’s expression was all the answer she needed. Then she picked up the phone and called her, but the second Zoe realised who it was, she hung up.
“Let me try,” Xavier offered.
Zac nodded and Xavier dialed the number.
“What?” she asked impatiently.
“Don’t hang up! It’s me, Xavier.”
“Make it quick. I’m tired.”
“Okay, see me and Adam we were mucking around in our room and I fell into the wardrobe and this shoe box fell on me. And we looked in the box and guess what was in there?”
“What?”
“Guess!”
“Xavier...”
“Oh okay, spoil sport. It was drugs. There’s some little white pills that remind me of headache tablets and there’s some bags of dark green stuff. Anyway, none of us are doing drugs, unless someone’s lying, and it ain’t me. I’m naturally high. But umm, see, me and Adam are in your old room, so...”
“And that’s why Zac thought it was me -”’
“Well, I don’t know if he actually thinks you would do drugs, but he did have to ask. Do you have any idea who they might belong to?”
Zoe yawned.
“I think Oliver slept in that room when we recorded our last album with him. They probably belonged to him.”
“Oh, okay, thanks. G’night.”
“Good night.”
Zoe hung up and Xavier told them what Zoe had told him. Zac seemed relieved.
“I should have thought of Oliver. Okay, now we should get rid of these before someone gets tempted.”
