Chapter 9

Avie was sitting in the kitchen. Well, actually she was kneeling on a chair near the sink. And she was concentrating very hard.

"Avie?" Zac asked. "Whatcha doing?"

"Shh." Avie replied.

Zac walked up closer to watch what she was doing. Slowly Avie breathed out, and as she did a stick of ice started to form. Once the breath was done she smiled in triumph.

"I knew I could do it." She said smugly. "Do you know how long I've been trying to do that for?"

"Well, considering your powers were only triggered oh, about… little less than a week ago…"

"Shut up. It feels like longer ok?"

Zac smiled.

"So, a pillar of ice huh?"

"Yeah, and I wouldn't touch that if I were you. It's really, really, cold." Avie said.

"Can, can I try something?" Zac asked.

Avie shrugged. Zac put the plug in the sink and filled it up with some water from the tap.

"Why don't you just make it come out of your hands?"

"Less tiring this way."

"Oh."

Zac concentrated and a little of the water shot up and touched the stick of ice.

"Cool!" he said as it froze there.

"Hey!" Avie objected.

Zac grinned, and concentrated. More water came up and eventually Zac created a little ice statue.

"That's right. Ruin my creation." Avie said. "I wonder how long it'll last?"

"Not long at all if ya let Zoe throw a flame at it."

"Speaking of Zoe, where is she?"

Avie and Zac looked at each other and that's when they smelt the smoke…

Avie pelted into the lounge room as fast as she could without being dangerous. Zoe looked up at her.

"I'm sowee." She said.

Avie gave her a slight smile as Zac came in looking incredulous. But Avie had no time to think about this, instead she breathed on the fire, concentrating hard to make use her ice breath wasn't too cold, just could enough to put the fire out.

"How'd you do that?" Zac asked, putting his hand near the burnt patch so as to restore it to its former glory.

"I breathed on it. Duh." Avie replied.

"No, no, not that… how'd you get in here so fast?"

"I ran."

Zac looked her up and down.

"I have never seen anyone run so fast. Except maybe the road runner."
