Chapter 18

"Come on everybodieth!" Ripples shouted. "Come on!"

Zac yawned.

"Ripples it's -" but he didn't get a chance to complain about the time as Ripple was tugging at his sleeve.

"Come! Da eggy-weggys are hachifying!"

'Great,' Zac thought, 'more insect people to wake me up at inconvenient times.'

Still, Zac got up and reluctantly followed Ripples to where Twinkles was anxiously watching the eggs.

"Looooook..." Twinkled breathed in awe.

Ripples ceased his efforts to wake everyone up to fly over and peer intently at the eggs.

More of the eggs were moving, but this one was beginning to crack open. The silence was almost deafening as they waited to see what would happen.

At last a little caterpillar with some definite human features slipped out. Twinkles flittered over to it and touched it gently.

"You alive?" she asked it.

There was, of course, no answer, but it did appear to be alive, as did four others. None of the other eggs hatched.

Twinkles and Ripples did their best to keep the remaining children alive, but sadly, three died, one in a few hours later, the others the following day. Still for such mutations, two children wasn't bad.

The girl had a caterpillar body, but with multiple human legs. The boy's human shaped body had a green a segmented appearance to it.

After the hatching, Zac looked in on the larvae. Some of the larvae had died since Twinkles had first given birth. And every now and then another one would die. According to Trinity it would be about a year before they would actually turn into dragonflies. Right now Zac thought they looked pretty ugly. He wondered how many would be left when the year was up.

"Oooh, they're so cute!" Jess had exclaimed upon seeing the caterpillar children. "What are their names?"

"No names yet," Ripples replied. "Dey pick their own namesies."

"Pick their own names?"

"Yeppy. Happen when know what powers dey have."

"But... what do you call them?"

Ripples gave her a look as if she was stupid.

"Babies!"

"Okay then," Jess answered.

"When will they make their cocoons?" Taylor asked.

Twinkles shrugged.

"Month or two?" she suggested.

"And how long in the cocoon?"

Twinkles scrunched up her face thinking.

"Me not know..."

"Okay then. Well, I guess we'll find out sooner or later."

"Yep!"
