Chapter 19

"So, how are you doing?" Zac asked.

"I'm fine," Mary Anne replied. "Now that things aren't so intense I'm... I think I'm coping with it all a bit better."

"Good."

Silence.

"We didn't get to talk much after the rescue."

"No."

"This isn't going to make things weird between us is it?"

"I hope not."

"Me too."

More silence.

"You don't need to worry," Mary Anne said. "I won't tell anyone."

"I wasn't planning on accusing you of that."

Silence again.

"I think... I think something that's making all this easier to cope with is well... there's so much mythology."

Zac laughed.

"No really," Mary Anne said. "You spoke of the dryads and we met those insect people on the island."

"Who get mistaken for 'magical fairy beings'."

"Exactly. And y'know, there were the mermaids and selkies and you told me about all the other creatures that mutants get mistaken for, and I... it's... it makes me wonder, you know?"

"You're just a mythology freak."

"What's your point?"

"Who said I had one?"

"Zac? You're weird."

"Yeah, I know."

"But seriously, knowing that there is so much mutant in myth, it... it's like an anchor I suppose. In a way, I realise I'm living in a world I always wished I lived in."

"Oh?"

"I can admit I have dreamed of living in a fantasy world."

"Hmm, well, I guess that's one way of looking at it. I just think it's weird."

Mary Anne laughed.

"Well, I think it'll still take more getting used to, but it's a start."

"I'm still getting used to it."
