Chapter 6

Isaac and Carla were standing on the balcony. Isaac's arm was around her.

"It's a beautiful night huh?" Carla commented after a moment.

Isaac was about to reply, when…

"Get away from my sister Hanson."

They turned around.

"Nate." Carla complained.

"What's your problem?" Isaac asked. "What is so bad about me hanging around Carla?"

"I just don't want you hanging around her." Nate answered.

Isaac and Nate's eyes were locked.

"Oh, stop it would you? Nate go away." Carla said.

"Sure, I'll leave. When he does." Nate replied.

"Look, Nate, I just want to enjoy a beautiful evening with Carla. Is that so bad?"

Nate just glared.

"I guess so. Too bad then."

On that Isaac turned his back to him and looked back out at the world. Carla seemed relieved at this decision and turned with him.

Next thing Isaac knew, Nate had grabbed his shoulder, whirled him around and made a swing at his eye. Isaac nearly panicked for a second, not because he was scared of Nate, no, certainly not! No, it was because a force field had automatically come up in front of his eye.

Isaac had been attempting for a long time to refine the programming on the 'automatic controls'. Fortunately, Nate didn't seem to notice. Good thing it was only a small force field.

"Nate!" Carla objected.

"Get away from my sister." Nate growled.

"Hey man, I don't want to fight you." Isaac answered.

"Then get the hell away from my sister."

"Umm, no. It's her life. I think she's allowed to hang out with - and date - whoever she damn well wants."

Wrong thing to say. Isaac was careful not to use his force fields as Nate slammed a fist into his stomach. Isaac crumbled for a moment, then shape shifted his bones into steel and grabbed Nate's arms to prevent him from attacking him again.

It worked for a moment, then Isaac felt his steel bones bending. Annoyed, he made a mental note to practice such things more often. Obviously he hadn't quite got the knack of it yet. Thinking his, he turned them into diamond - the hardest substance in the world. Maybe that would work.

It did. Once Isaac had control of the situation (and noting that his girlfriend was looking rather upset), he pushed Nate away about five feet.

"Look, I told you." Isaac said. "I ain't looking for a fight."

Nate ignored him and came forward for another swing at him.

"Nate!" Carla said.

Nate barely glanced at her, but he couldn't help but see what happened next. Carla put her hands on Isaac's cheeks and kissed him passionately on his lips.
