Chapter 8

“Well, this is going to be fun!” Isaac declared. “Playing the guitar with a broken leg and a fractured wrist.”

“Ha ha.” Zac teased.

Zac was standing next to Isaac’s bed in the hospital with a big smirk on his face.

“Oh I see, full of sympathy. Y’know, I don’t think you’re going to play drums any time soon – not with your arm the way it is.”

“It’s just a sprain – and it wouldn’t have happened if certain people didn’t fall on top of me.” Zac replied, giving his brother a pointed glare.

“As if I did it on purpose.”

“As if you didn’t.”

“Why would I ever do such a thing?”

“I don’t know. You the one who did it! Why don’t you tell me?”

“Knock it off you two.” Jess scolded.

“Jess? You ok?” Isaac asked.

She nodded slowly.

“I just... oh, I know everyone’s going to be ok. It’s all stuff that’ll heal in a few weeks. Well, except for Taylor.”

“What did happen with Taylor? No one’s telling me anything.” Isaac asked in obvious frustration.

“He’s in a coma.” Zac replied.

“I, I tried healing him.” Jess admitted. “But I, I, I just can’t bring him out of this coma.”

Zac put his arm (the one that wasn’t sprained) around her.

“Don’t worry Jess. I’m sure Taylor will be fine.”

Jess shook her head.

“That’s not... that’s not it... I just... ok, ok, you know how I told you a while ago now that I can sense people’s injuries just by touching them?”

“Yeah? So?”

“Well, I can’t find anything in...” Jess paused, looked around and lowered her voice. “I can’t find anything in his head that would explain him being in a coma. It’s not natural.”

“Since when is being in a coma natural?” Isaac asked.

“Oh, you know what I mean.”

“Don’t worry Jess. I’m sure everything is going to work out fine ok?” Zac assured her.

Jess tried to be comforted, but her Empathy was telling her that Zac was trying to convince himself as well.
