“I don’t think he will,” Nate replied in response to this, “I mean, he seems a little arrogant, y’know? He didn’t make sure you guys were dead. I’m sure in normal circumstances you would have been, but he knew that you guys had powers and he didn’t even bother to make sure of the job.”
Still, though they had been his words, Nate was just as nervous as everyone else about the possibility. He could bring any number of cronies and all they could do was hope that their status as Triggered would be enough to stop them.
But what if he brought an army? There was just the eight of them, for Walker, Diana, Avery, Mackie and Zoe had been moved to a motel room just in case the worst happened. An army would definitely be the worst. Taylor hardly thought that the eight of them would be enough against hundreds.
Jessica slapped him.
“Stop broadcasting,” she scolded. “You’re making the mood worse.”
“Sorry,” Taylor muttered, and clamped down on his empathy.
Trinity and Rocky were still with them. And they had contacted MIA and organised for some additional backup. However, there had been no sign of them. Either the backup hadn’t arrived, or they had been ordered to keep radio silent.
Or Isaac and his army had already taken care of them.
Then Taylor’s probe tingled.
*He’s coming,* he told everyone. *There are two others in the car. I can’t sense anyone else.*
That was certainly good news. But Zac supposed that just because Taylor couldn’t sense anyone else didn’t mean they weren’t there. This MIA backup they were supposedly getting hadn’t been sensed either.
The car stopped outside the house, and Isaac got out. The driver and the second henchman in the car looked at each other, but said nothing. They had learnt quickly to be very quiet around Isaac, lest he find something to punish them for.
Isaac had ranted and raved all the trip about so-called ‘people’ who had the nerve to insult him. Insult Him! In sky writing no less, so that everyone would see the insult. Well, he’d punish them for their offence, and he would make sure that they couldn’t insult him ever again. The example he would make of them would cause the whole world to shudder!
He scanned the house, and then started walking down the path.
Zac, from his vantage point, looked down.
“C’mon, c’mon,” he muttered.
*Carla?* Taylor asked, tentatively.
As the only telepath capable of sending to everyone, Taylor was in charge of communications.
*I can’t!* she wailed.
*Why not this time?* Taylor asked, irritatated.
*He’s got his force fields up. I can’t get through.*
Oh.
