"See, unlike a certain brother," Jess was saying as they headed to the eatery, "who almost always has his empathic block up, I like to have it down slightly. Good exercise says I."
"So, what do you girls feel like?" Diana asked.
"I am not having any more Macca's." Jess declared. "Gross."
"Ditto." Avie agreed.
Diana smiled.
"So, what do you want?"
"Umm…"
A little way into lunch, Avie's eyes started glowing. She shut them quickly and Jess was looking rather alarmed… but not by what had happened to Avie's eyes.
Diana looked between her daughters curiously.
"Girls?" she asked.
It was over in a couple of seconds.
"Well, that's was weird." Jess commented.
"What was weird?"
Jess pondered this for a moment.
"It, it was like my powers increased a hundred fold and then dropped back down again. I could feel… emotions, but not like, the usual surface emotions, I could feel what people were feeling deep down inside. Inner feelings?"
"Whoa." Avie whistled.
"And that's not it. I swear I could vaguely feel like, aches and pains of the people around me."
"Really? So you could tell that the blind guy that just walked past was blind?" Avie asked.
"No… but that could mean anything. Like, maybe his blindness wasn't caused by an injury."
"Good point."
"Maybe we should leave…" Diana said.
"No, we don't need to." Jess insisted. "It'll only be a problem if Avie's eyes start glowing again. But hey, if anyone notices and asks, we can always say she's auditioning for Star Gate."
Avie giggled.
A few minutes later as they were getting up from the table after lunch, it happened again. However, this time Avie was letting out a sigh as it happened.
It was over as suddenly as it began and Avie held a small piece of ice in her hand.
"I, I, I've never been able to do anything so small before…" Avie said in obvious shock. "But I swear, I didn't do it on purpose! I didn't mean -"
"It's ok Avie." Diana assured her, looking at the piece of ice. "But I didn't know you could create dry ice."
