Scene 9

The day had come. The first game of many. The Ducks verses the Bears. The whistle blew.

The player whom Adam had identified as the enforcer was just that. In fact, he seemed much larger than what his statistics had suggested.

Guy felt the sweat drip down his face. There was only thirty seconds to go. He pushed his hockey stick against the puck as it slid in his direction. It flew across the ice towards the goal. The Bears’ goalie lunged towards it…

BEEEEEEEEEEEP!

“Yes!” Guy exulted, both verbally and telepathically just as the end of the game was sounded.

The Ducks and their fans erupted in cheers, and those on the rink returned to their respective benches.

“Nice shot Guy,” Connie smiled as he took off his helmet.

“Thanks.”

“We kicked their butts,” Averman grinned, his eyes glittering.

“One game down, and a whole bunch more to go,” Goldberg added just before taking a swig of water.

“And we’re gonna win them too,” Ken declared.

“How do you think the Varsity did?” asked Connie.

“Ahh, who cares? This is our moment,” Luis replied.

“Yes, this is our moment,” Russ agreed. *You hear that, little hockey puck?*

*Ha! You didn’t even shoot one goal.*

*We still won. And besides, this is the first game of the series - be a shame to embarrass them with such overkill.*

*Excuses, excuses! You couldn’t score a goal if you were an inch away!*

*This coming from a piece of plastic that’s just been pulverised by hockey sticks!*

*At least they can hit me!*

Adam reached out and grabbed Russ before he went marching back out on the rink.

“It’s just a hockey puck, Russ.”

*Yeah, I’m just a poor, defenseless, little hockey puck,* the puck taunted.

*You’re asking for it!*

*No, you are, gorilla-head!*

“There has got to be a way to get to the locker room without him…” Adam trailed off and just pointed with an exasperated sigh.

“Allow me,” Fulton said.

Drawing on his Chance-Strength, just a little so the chances were only 50-50 of success, Fulton reached out for Russ and managed to pick him up. He grinned as he realised his success and carried him across to the locker room, the rest of the ducks following and the crowd in a roar of cheers.
