Scene 7

“So, who are we playing first?” asked Charlie.

“Brookville High - umm, the Bears,” Averman replied.

Charlie, Averman, Goldberg and Adam had decided to check out their opposition in the upcoming championship.

“Okay, these are all the stats on the Bears,” Adam said, pulling out a file and opening it in front of them.

“Wow, a lot of them have Bear, huh?” Goldberg observed.

“That might explain the name,” Charlie grinned.

Adam whistled softly.

“This guy is huge,” he said, pointing to the height and weight. “He’s got to be the enforcer.”

“Do we have any tapes?” asked Charlie.

“I bet I can track some down,” Averman answered.

“Do that then. Every little bit helps. This isn’t going to be an ordinary championship; powers like Empathy and Telepathy are going to be blatantly used -"

“Not that we don’t do that ourselves,” Goldberg remarked dryly.

“Which reminds me, they have some extra rules,” Adam said, brandishing a sheet of paper. “No Telekinesis is at the top of the list.”

“Better make sure Dwayne knows - not that’s he’s in the habit of using it during games,” Goldberg said.

“What else is there?” asked Averman.

Adam scanned the list.

“Not much that effects us. Oh, well, the use of Empathy isn’t permitted, or Teleportation.”

“I’m a goalie,” Goldberg remarked. “What good would that do me?”

“Telepathy is only permitted between teammates. Technology isn’t allowed,” Adam sounded surprised. “What could Ken possibly do with Technology that would change the outcome of the game?”

They considered this for a moment.

“Rig the goal buzzer? Rig the scoring?” Goldberg suggested.

“Wow, these people think of everything,” Averman laughed.

“Changing your shape consciously is also a no-no,” Adam went on. “I guess that means people who change with the elements are exempt.”

“What about Strength, Agility and Speed?” Charlie asked. “I scanned the rules before but I didn’t notice what it had on them.”

“It doesn’t have anything,” Adam answered. “Probably because they’re so much a part of the person it’s really hard to separate the two. They are unconscious powers after all.”

“Well, except in Fulton’s case,” Averman remarked with a smile.

“I think they’ll leave him alone about that. Oh and that’s the other thing, the refs, and/or the judges on the side have Empathy and Deep Telepathy,” Charlie said.

“To make sure we don’t break the rules,” Goldberg inferred dryly. “Gee, anyone would think they didn’t trust us.”

“Well, some people would cheat,” Charlie answered sadly. “They do have to make sure it’s fair. Let’s face it, if they let Telekinesis in, getting goals could be really easy.”

“Yeah, but where’s the fun in that?” Adam asked. “Better to do it on your own physical merits than rely on powers to accomplish what you want to do.”
