Chapter 14

Taylor didn't stop running until he got to his room. He threw the door shut and then started pacing around the room. He ran his hands through his hair.

"Oh my freaking goodness," he yelped.

He banged his head against the window sill, turned around and ran his hands through his hair again. He took a few deep breaths and then his eyes feel onto his computer.

"Oh Moira, if there was ever a time when I needed you - again - this would be it."

Moira appeared in the room out of thin air.

"Hi Taylor."

"Moira? Moira!" Taylor exclaimed, bounding over and giving her a hug. "I missed you so much. What's happened to you? I thought you had gone for good."

Moira hugged back.

"Nah, I'd only be gone for good if I didn't know that I was your invisible friend. But I do, so instead of fading into nothingness, I entered the plane of the non-existent people," she grinned at him. "It's been fun. I met Santa Claus."

"Santa Claus?"

"Yep. Nice guy. Don't blame him for being so fat though, Mrs Claus is an excellent cook."

"Umm, right..."

"Met the Easter Bunny too. See, he and Santa have a game of golf every Friday."

Taylor had to smile.

"Met any other interesting people?"

"Sure. Lots of other non-existent people. We had a huge party about a month ago. Ooh, I met the Tooth Fairy."

"The Tooth Fairy?"

"Sure. Nice enough girl, but a little too absorbed in the tooth market."

"The tooth market?"

"Yeah. She has to keep up to date on the going prices for teeth."

Taylor laughed, then sobered.

"Man, I'm in a lot of trouble."

"I know."

"You know? Then why didn't you come sooner?"

"You didn't call me. There are rules, Tay, I can't come if you don't call."

"Wow, I... I had no idea..."

"Well, you do now."

"So, what do we do?"

Moira was silent for a moment.

"You have to remain strong, Tay, and resist her. She may be the embodiment of suicide, but she brings death of any nature where she walks. All the recent deaths have been result of her presence."

"What?"

"I'm sorry, Taylor, but it's true. Now, I might add, that I don't know for sure that Luke wouldn't have died, or Belinda. I only know that she attracts death, like all her siblings, well, except Grim, but that's because he a messenger. Look, listen to me Taylor. You have to stay strong. You have to resist her at all costs. Because if she succeeds in getting you to kill yourself, there is nothing anyone can do."

Taylor licked his lips nervously.

"To be completely honest, Moira, I don't know how long I can! I mean, when I'm not near her, I'm fine, but when I am... well... each time I feel like my defenses are breaking down just that little bit more."

Moira cupped his face in her hands and got up so close their noses nearly touched.

"I know, I know, Taylor. But you can do this. You can stay strong. You can do this. And that's all you can do."

"But... but for how long?"

"Hopefully not too long. There's something I have to do. Just... stay strong until then, okay? You can do that for me."

"What are you going to do?"

"The only thing I can do."

"What's that?"

"I can't tell you. There are rules, Tay. Suicida's broken them, but I won't. If we're going to get rid of her, then we... err... have to follow the rules. I'm sorry, that's all I can say," she leaned forward and kissed him.

"So… so you're going again aren't you?"

"I have to."

"I'm not sure how well I'll last without you with me."

Moira smiled and picked up a pair of scissors. She hesitated for a moment and then cut off a lock of her hair. She tied it carefully to a chain, and then put it around Taylor's neck.

"Su won't be able to see this. No one will, except you and me. It'll help keep you safe. If you ever feel your strength draining, touch this and think of me," she advised.

Taylor looked at it, then at Moira.

"Thank you," he breathed. "I'm glad I have something of you, at least."

"I have to go now. I'll come back, if I can. I promise!"

And without another word, she was gone.
