Chapter 17

After the balloon was finished, the Wizard announced to the people of Oz that he was going to visit a fellow wizard. He told them that Taylor would rule over them while he was gone.

"Toby!" Daria yelped as he leapt out of his arms to chase after a cat.

She got out of the balloon to get hold of him. Unfortunately, as she ran back to the balloon with Toby back in her arms the balloon was already flying off.

"No! Come back!"

"I can't come back! Goodbye!"

"Goodbye!" returned the people of Oz.

Daria, as you can well imagine, was very upset. However, Taylor had an idea.

"Why don't you call the winged monkeys?" he suggested.

Her face brightened. She nodded quickly, got the Golden Visor and called the winged monkeys.

"This is your second wish." The leader said to her upon arrival.

"I want you to take me back to Kansas." She said.

The leader shook his head.

"Then you have wasted a wish, for we cannot go out of the Land of Oz."

And before Daria could reply, the winged monkeys took off again.

"Oh no." she sobbed, and burst into tears again.

"There, there Daria. You can come and live in the Winkie country with me." Isaac offered. "I know it won't be Kansas, but it'll still be a home."

"Or you can live in the Emerald City with me." Taylor put in.

"Oh, you've very kind, but I... I just want to go home. To Kansas. To Auntie Erin and Uncle Harry - they'll be awfully worried about me."

A few minutes later, Taylor decided that they could ask the sole soldier if he knew a way.

"Well, I don't. But Gretchen, the Good Witch of the South might. She rules over the Quadlings, and her home is directly south from here."

After that the solder left.

"Well, I guess you'll have to see Gretchen." Taylor said. "I will come with you."

"Me too." Isaac added.

"Me three!" Zac grinned.

"Then it's settled, we'll leave tomorrow morning."

Daria smiled happily.
