Chapter 8

It was the night of the reunion and Rita was really nervous. On top of the fact that Rita had been so quiet and shy during school (which was interesting considering she was, or used to be, a jazz singer and had no problems singing in front of large audiences), she was married to Taylor Hanson. C'mon, imagine the reception they got!

"Uhh, I'm just going to go to the bathroom." Rita murmured to Taylor somewhere during the evening.

"Ok. But don't leave me alone too long." He smiled.

Rita smiled back and headed off into the bathroom and went into one of the cubicles. While she was doing her business, she heard someone else come in. Like anyone, she didn't think anything of it. That is, until she heard the person crying in the cubicle next door.

"Uhh hello?" she said nervously. "Are you ok?"

The woman sniffed. Rita bit her lip and flushed the dunny.

"Are you ok?" she asked again.

"Who are you?" the woman sniffed from behind the door.

"Rita Hanson. Oh, well, I was Rita Masters at school."

There wasn't a reply. Then, as Rita washed and dried her hands, the woman came out, tears staining her face.

"Oh Rita, I knew I shouldn't have come here tonight. I knew I shouldn't have."

"I, I, I'm sorry. Uhh, did I know you at school?"

The woman nodded.

"Well, yes, in a manner of speaking. My name's Kayla, but you would have known me as Trent."

Rita stared at her.

"You, you had a sex change? Trent Simpson?"

Trent, uhh, Kayla nodded.

"Yes, I know, I know. I've been getting that sort of reaction all evening. And I've been given such a hard time. Oh I knew I shouldn't have come." Kayla burst into tears again.

Rita didn't know what to say for a moment. Then she gave her a hug.

"I, I guess, I guess they've just always thought of Trent as, well, y'know, a guy who had it all. You were smart and you played sports and you were really popular. I suppose it's hard for them to accept that, well, you know…"

Kayla sniffed.

"I guess you of all people would understand huh? No offence or anything but who would have thought the quietest person in the school would marry a rock star?"

Rita giggled.

"Would you like to sit with me and Taylor?"

"Sure, sure. Just let me dry my eyes." Kayla paused. "I don't suppose you have any lip gloss?"
