Chapter 71

Babsie had never felt more sick to the stomach in her life when she saw Cosmo lying there on the ground. There was blood everywhere and possibly worst of all was how twisted and crushed his legs looked.

She had barely spoken a word since. She didn't even yell at the doctors. She just sat in the waiting room, staring at the wall, unusually silent.

"Babs?" Isaac asked, entering.

Babsie barely looked at him. Isaac sat down next to her and held her hand.

"Any news? He inquired finally.

Babsie just shook her head. Isaac noticed that tears had stared pricking at her eyes and he wrapped his arms around her.

"I, I can't take this Ike." She said at last. "First Cassie, then Diana and Walker and Yassie. I don't want to see Cosmo go too."

"Neither do I." Isaac replied, holding her closer. "I'm sure he'll be all right."

"You didn't see how he looked lying there." She said, starting to cry (yet another unique sight). "I have never felt so helpless."

Isaac wasn't sure what to say. They sat there in silence for a while.

"This is all my fault. I should have kept a closer eye on them."

"Now, that's not fair Babs." Isaac retorted. "Accidents happen all the time. And you and Rita had been busy looking after the other kids as well as doing a bunch of other stuff. Besides, this isn't the only time the triplets have gone off on their own. We've been trying to break them off that habit for a while."

"Knowing that does not make me feel any better."

"Does it stop you from blaming yourself?"

Babsie didn't answer.

"The way I see it." Isaac continued. "There is only one person to blame. The driver. Heck, they didn't even stop! That's hit-and-run Babs, and it's illegal."

There was silence for a moment.

"I don't want to lose my little boy." Babsie whimpered.

"Me neither."

A few moments later and doctor walked into the room.

"Mrs Hanson?" he asked presently.

"Yes?" Babsie asked, looking up.

"He's going to live -"

"Oh my gosh! Oh, thank you."

"Uhh, however," the doctor continued, "there have been some complications."

"What kind of complications?" Isaac demanded.

The doctor gave him a quizzical look.

"I'm his father." Isaac explained.

"Right, ok." The doctor nodded. "Well, both his legs were severely broken. We'd like to keep him here for observation for, say a week. Best case scenario, we have his legs in plaster for around six weeks and then therapy to have him walking properly again."

"Worst case scenario?"

"We may have to amputate his left leg below the knee."
