Chapter 28

Zac was miserable all day. Kelsey had tried to call him a few times, but he'd just hung up on her. Eventually he turned his mobile phone off altogether. His brothers and sisters-in-law started to worry after receiving a frantic call from Kelsey.

Later that day, he was at a pub, moping on a barstool.

"Cheatin' on me man. All dat time, she was cheatin' on me." He said, obviously drunk. "I thought she loved me."

"Women." said the bloke next to him. 'Who needs 'em? Bunch o' cheating bitches the lot of them."

"Exactly." Zac hiccuped. "Bartender! Another round for me an' my mate 'ere."

"Don't you boys think you've drunk enough?" the woman next to them asked.

"Never!" the bloke objected. "Always room for more."

"I loved her. She hates me." Zac sang drunkenly to the Barney tune. "We're a screwed up family… well, no, leas' I foun' out before dat happ'ned."

The bartender gave them their drinks.

"What exactly happened anyway?" the woman asked.

"Me goin' to see 'er for first time in months, 'cause like, we both on tours. Differ'nt tours. An' I see her kissin' some other dude." Zac took a huge gulp of his drink. "Well, s'pose I shoul' 'ave 'spected it. Once me 'ad 48 girlfriends at the same time."

"Forty-eight?" the woman repeated.

"Whoo hoo! Go Zac!" the drunkard next to him cheered.

"Yep. Ike an' Tay always said I'd pay for it. Kel prob'ly dating ev'ry other guy she tours with."

Zac finished off his drink.

"Another! Another! I wan' another! Now." He hiccuped.

Isaac was waiting in the lobby of the hotel that they were staying at that night. Taylor was going to take his place if Zac hadn't arrived in an hour.

Finally, a very drunk Zac arrived led by the woman at the bar. He was singing very badly at the top of his lungs.

"Oh my gosh." Isaac said, hurrying over. "Damn. Thanks for bringing him here."

"Hey, no problem." She replied nervously. "Umm, I was just wondering, is it true Zac used to have forty-eight girlfriends at the same time?"

"A million bo'les o' beer on da wall." Zac sang.

"Why?" Isaac asked finally.

"Oh, umm, because I uhh…"

"Five hundred and t'elve bo'les o' beer!"

"Were you one of them?" he asked gently.

She nodded. Isaac gave a wry smile.

"I'm not sure of the number, but since he was about twelve or thirteen to about, umm, sixteen or seventeen he was a major player. I'm sorry you got hurt."

"Take one down, pass it aroun'."

"Well, look, umm, if he… uhh, if he remembers me in the morning, umm, can you give him this?"

Not waiting for an answer, she placed her business card in Isaac's hand.

"Ok, that was weird. C'mon Zac. Let's get you upstairs."

"Six'y free bo'les o' beer on da wall!"
