Chapter 71

"Whoa baby that's a beauty." Zac commented. "What happened? You have an accident with a tennis ball machine on turbo or sumthin'?"

Isaac didn't answer. He just sat down that the table and started poking at his dinner.

"Ike?" Diana asked.

Needlessly to say, Isaac would have much rather have stayed hidden in his room until his black eye had healed.

"You know, there's this old joke. When a boy comes home with a black eye, he says to his father 'you should have seen the other guy'." Walker smiled.

"Who ya get into a fight with Ike?" Jess questioned.

"I'm not sure I like the idea of you getting into fights." Diana told him.

"Yeah, I know." Isaac replied. "It's not like I intended it."

"Ah ha! So it was a fight with a tennis ball machine on turbo." Zac exclaimed triumphantly, then he frowned. "No, you said it wasn't intended so that would make it an accidental fight with a tennis ball machine on turbo."

They had to laugh. Everyone except Rita who wasn't really paying much attention, just picking at her food.

"Was it Mark?" Jess asked suddenly.

"No." Isaac answered.

Jess wasn't so convinced.

"You can tell me the truth you know. If it was Mark, just tell me."

"It wasn't Mark, Jess, don't worry."

"Really? Are you sure? I don't want you hiding the truth from me."

"I'm not lying."

"Because it's not going -"

"Jess! It wasn't Mark ok! It was Babsie." Isaac blurted out.

There was silence.

"Babsie?" Zac repeated. "You got into a fight with Babsie?"

"You're not going around hitting girls now are you Ike?" Diana asked.

"Damn, of course not! What do you take me for?"

"I had no idea Babsie could do such damage. That's even better than the one you got on tour." Zac continued, wondrously.

There was quiet.

"What did ya fight about anyway?" Zac asked after awhile.

"None of your business."

Zac thought for a moment.

"Ooh, I bet I know. You've fallen head-over-heels in love with her, and tried to make moves. But since Babsie's not interested in marriage, she tried to let you down gently, you wouldn't take 'no' for answer and kept pushing, so that's when Babsie hit you. I have it all figured out."

"Yeah Zac, that's exactly it."

"No it's not. Ahh well, it could be because -"

"Zac?"

"Yep?"

"Shut up."

"Ok."
