Chapter 23

It was Isaacs' 23rd birthday. And it wasn't a surprise party, although he was rather suspicious all day, waiting for a surprise he was sure would happen.

"Quit being paranoid." Babsie scolded. "It's driving me insane."

"That's not exactly hard to do, considering you already are insane."

"Yeah, I know, but it sounds good ok?"

Despite his suspicions, he thoroughly enjoyed the day. And it was surprise free if you ignore the fact that he was surprised by the fact that he wasn't surprised... uhh... sounds like a Catch 22 there...

"I can't believe I let you into talking me into coming here." Jess complained.

"Hey girl, Star Trek rules." Babsie replied.

"I can't believe you even like it."

"I'll have you know that all sorts of people like it. I know ten year olds that like it."

Jess didn't look impressed.

"We aren't all nerds and middle aged people you know."

"They may not be nerds, but you're all whackos. I mean, c'mon, as if you would." Jess gestured to a couple of fans dressed as Klingons.

"Hey dude, don't diss Klingons. Klingons rock. I even have a Klingon costume at home."

"How come I'm not surprised?"

Babsie grinned.

"Ooh, look at that! Don't move, I'll be right back."

Jess watched as Babsie bounded off towards one of the stalls. She shook her head incredulously.

"Hey, what's your name?"

Jess turned to the voice. Standing next to her was a rather masculine guy in one of the Star Fleet uniforms. There were some funny spots painted on the sides of his face and down his neck. It almost looked sexy. Almost. Later Jess learned he was dressed as a Trill.

"I'm Jess. Who are you? Your real name that is."

"Austin." He laughed.

"Ok, deja vu. My brother has a thing for Austin Powers."

Austin grinned.

"Enjoying yourself?"

"No. I'm not even a fan. My sister-in-law dragged me along."

"Oh, I'm sure she'll convert you yet." He teased. "Actually, I'm not a fan either. My friend dragged me along."

"Then why are you dressed up?"

"Black mail." He joked. "Actually, I don't mind so much. I work for a mascott agency."

"Mascott?"

"Yeah, you know those people who dress up in those character costumes, run around, act like idiots and stuff... That's what I do."

"Really? Sounds like fun."

Austin laughed.

"Yeah it is, except during summer. Wow, it gets powerfully hot. Build up some major sweat then."

"Delightful."

"I'm sorry. Don't mean to gross you off."

Babsie was about to rejoin Jess, but seeing her have a conversation with a, uhh, normal(?) guy, she bounded off to do her own thing.
