Taylor and Isaac were going over some demos and deciding where to send scouts. They preferred to check out potential signees themselves, but sometimes it simply wasn’t feasible.
They were now making good progress.
“You put down Monkey Business?” Taylor questioned, somewhat surprised.
Isaac nodded, biting his lip.
“Zac didn’t, I didn’t... I thought it might be unanimous...”
“Well, I wasn’t going to,” Isaac admitted. “But Carmen thinks we should.”
Taylor gave him an amused look.
“Carmen?” he repeated.
“Hey, don’t laugh,” Isaac defended.
“I’m not! I’m just... your asking your kid what she thinks?”
“I didn’t ask. She came in while I was listening to it and she told me.”
That did it. Taylor laughed.
“Yeah. yeah, yeah,” Isaac grumbled. “Laugh all you want, but I think Carmen’s developed her mother’s sixth sense for the music business, thank you very much. She’s been right about such things in the past.”
Taylor stopped laughing and considered this.
“Right... how?”
“Well, you wouldn’t necessarily know, but see... ok, she said that... who was it? Shining Armour would break up in a year or whatever and they did. She picks out number ones all the time, and although she’s not always right, if it doesn’t go number one, it sure gets close. I just... I think she’s worth listening to, Tay.”
Taylor chewed his lip silently.
“Look, it won’t hurt to check them out, will it?” Isaac asked. “Their music isn’t terrible, you have to admit that. And, y’know, if we do and it turns out to be a bad decision, well, I mean, it won’t be the end of the world. Goodness knows it’s not like we can’t afford it.”
At last Taylor spoke:
“There were always times with Babsie that none of us agreed that the band or duet or soloist or song would make it, but as far as I can remember she was always right. And even though we knew she was always right, there were always time when we doubted her. But because she was always right, we always humoured her. If you honestly believe that Carmen might have Babsie’s gift, then I‘m willing to humour her too.”
Isaac’s smile was one of relief. Taylor checked the notes.
“They’re only in Oklahoma City. Why don’t you check them out? Take Carmen with you and see if she still has her opinion of them when you meet them.”
“Will do.”
Isaac pulled aside the Monkey Business file, and the two brothers went on with their discussion.
