Chapter 41

Zac was at a huge charity concert. He had heard about it only by chance and thought it would be a great place to scout talent.

"Hey, hey, hey aren't you Zac Hanson?" someone asked in the crowd.

Zac turned around. It was an older woman, well, he guessed it was a woman... but her chest was... well, it wasn't there.

"Yeah, yes I am." He replied. "And you?"

"I'm Kathryn Halliday. My daughter is playing in the concert with her band today."

"Oh."

"I, uhh, don't suppose I could have your autograph? I've been a fan for years."

"Sure."

Zac signed his name on her program.

"So, ahh, you have you're own record company?"

"Yep." He gave her a sly grin. "Actually scouting for new bands and stuff, so you never know. Maybe your girls' band will end up on the list. What's their name?"

"The Amazons."

"Amazons? Aren't they female warriors or something?"

Kathryn smiled.

"Yes. The name was appropriate."

"Why? Do they like mud fighting or something?"

She laughed.

"No, no. 'Amazon' comes from a Greek word meaning 'breastless'. The Amazons would voluntarily destroy their right breast so to improve the use of their weapons."

"Eww." Zac said, pulling a face.

Kathryn gave him an amused look.

"The girls' mothers and I have all had or have breast cancer. And you know how it can be inherited."

"Oh. Black humour. I see."

"Well, if you would call it that. They do a lot of shows to raise money for research too. It was appropriate."

"Yeah, I suppose. But I will never think of Amazons the same way again."

She laughed.

Kathryn proved to be a valuable source of information. She seemed to have known a fair number of the bands that performed that night and was able to give him extra details he would not have gathered from just watching them.
