Chapter 6

January 2026

Jesse sat down by Morgan at the table.

“Hey,” he said slowly.

“Hey,” she replied.

Silence.

“Is this... is this how it’s going to be between us now? Just awkward silences and short, meaningless conversations?”

Morgan shrugged.

“I’m sorry,” she sighed. “I like you a lot, Jesse, but I just... I keep remembering the look on Caro’s face when Will, drunk and all, announced that you were in love with me, not her.”

“Actually I thought the look when Will confessed that he loved her was pretty good... Okay I’m shutting up now.”

More silence.

“Morgan...”

“Yeah?”

Jesse sighed.

“I did the wrong thing. I know. I didn’t think you liked me, not in that way, anyway. I’m sorry. I’ve said I’m sorry a million times and still... nothing... I know I brought this on myself but I’m going nuts, Morgan. I really would like for us to be friends again. Real friends. And hopefully, one day, if you can forgive me, we could start dating. But if this is all there going to be...” Jesse spread out his hands and shrugged.

Morgan looked down at her cup of coffee. Jesse closed his eyes, sighed and started to get up and walk away. At the last moment, Morgan grabbed his hand. He stopped at looked down at her. Slowly, Morgan pushed back her chair and stood up. She closed the distance between them.

“Things can never go back to the way they were,” she said seriously.

“I know,’ Jesse replied quietly.

Morgan drew closer until there was only an inch of space between them.

“I used to have a crush on you, y’know.”

A small smile appeared on Jesse’s face.

“And then you got to know me? I remember you freaking out the first time we met.”

“Ha, you should have seen the freak out when I realised you gave me your email. Why did you give me your email anyway?”

Jesse shrugged.

“You were cute. And I figured that growing up in a household full of celebrities you’d get over the freak out thing.”

“And if I didn’t?”

“That’s not the only email address I have.”

Morgan laughed softly, then chewed her bottom lip. For a moment they just stood there like that, then, tentatively Morgan lifted her head and met his lips with hers. The kiss was short and sweet and to the point and Jesse wondered if this could be some form of torture for what he had done. Then Morgan kissed him again, deeply and hungrily.

And all I’m going to add is that what followed caused Morgan’s cup of coffee to fall off the table and spill everywhere.
