Not long after Zac was released from hospital that April, Sarah was admitted. The months of preparation had passed and the moment of truth had arrived. Sarah was being impregnated with Zoe and Chris’s baby.
Surrogacy might be widely accepted, but it still felt odd.
“Okay,” said the doctor in charge when the procedure was over. “It might be a couple of weeks before we can confirm if you’re pregnant. Just go home, relax, try a test in a week or so. You’re free to go home now.”
Sarah nodded and got up off the bed. A little later she had changed and joined Jim, Zoe and Chris in the waiting room.
“Might be a couple of weeks before the pregnancy is confirmed. “Hopefully it’ll take and we won’t have to try again, huh?”
“That would be good,” Zoe smiled.
She hugged her sister tightly.
“Thanks again, so much.”
Sarah smiled.
“My pleasure.”

A few weeks later Chris called out for Zoe:
“Phone!”
“Okay,” Zoe replied with a sigh.
Music... must record music...
“Hello?” Zoe said, picking up the phone.
“Zoe!” Sarah exclaimed happily. “Guesswhatguesswhatguesswhat!”
Zoe paused and swallowed hard.
“You’re pregnant?” she asked hopefully.
“Yes!”
“Oh!” Zoe replied, tears welling up in her eyes. “Oh! That’s wonderful! Sarah!”
“I know, ‘thank you’,” Sarah teased.
“Okay, I know I’m thanking you a lot but...”
Sarah chuckled.
“It’s okay. I’m sure were our roles reversed I’d thank you a lot too. I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have Nadine and Elijah.”
“Yeah,” Zoe bounced a little. “Okay wow, I so have to tell Chris. Thank you so much. Oh, and congratulations!”
“Congratulations to you to, Zoe,” Sarah chuckled again and the two hung up.
