Chapter 8

"I suppose as your host for this evening, I will tell my story first." Doug began. "It started when I was about… your age Jess. I grew up on a farm in England. Now, outside the farm next door was a creek where my friends and I liked to play and fish and so forth. One day while we was playing down in the creek, there was a sudden thunderstorm."

Doug sat back on his chair and closed his eyes for a moment.

"I remember running. The creek tended to get rather flooded when it rained and I didn't want to get caught in it. It got dark rather quickly too, and well, I had a lot of farm to go through before I reached home. Now, there was an electrical fence at the edge of our farm - to keep the rabbits out. However, that day I did not see it. I ran right into it. Got the shock of my life."

He chuckled at his pun.

"Well, to make a long story short, soon thereafter I discovered I had powers. A power over electricity, Telekinesis and a power to make things invisible."

"Cool." Zac said gleefully.

"Naturally, I was happy to use my powers, but I never publicly told anyone about them. We had a few… there were certain people where I lived that would probably make my life miserable if they ever found out. Not that they didn't make it miserable already but there was no point in giving them ammunition. It was around then that I developed an interest in magic shows. Some years later, I married and we had two children. Obviously."

Carla smiled.

"When Nate was about twelve he and Susan - my wife - were in a car accident. Sadly, Susan died on impact. Nate was in hospital. He had suffered severe head injuries and the doctors believed that in a matter of hours he would be brain dead. However, I knew that there was a certain type of electricity I had at my disposal that could save him. Or at least I hoped it would. At any rate, the doctors wouldn't do any more so I figured it was better to do something than wait around…" Doug paused for a moment. "Than wait around and wait for him to die. I gave him a shot of the electricity and, well, obviously it worked."

Nate's eyes flickered towards Isaac.

"And soon thereafter it became evident that Nate, too, had powers. When we returned home, he complained he felt Carla in his head. So, I took a risk and used the electricity - although a smaller, uhh, dose - on Carla too. Nate has - well, perhaps you'd like to tell them yourselves?"

"I have Telepathy, I can move through solids objects and I have control over metal." Nate answered.

"Telepathy as well." Carla told them. "Shape Shifting, as you already know, and I can, uhh, rearrange atoms and molecules. Umm, not all type of atoms or molecules yet though."

"Eventually we put together our magic shows and well, obviously we made it in the industry. And until today no one ever knew." Doug finished.

"So, you have an Affinity with Electricity, Telekinesis and Invisibility." Taylor said. "Nate has Telepathy, can move through solid objects and an Affinity with Metal. And Carla has Telepathy, Shape Shifting and, can rearrange atoms."

"Yes." Doug answered. "And now, perhaps, you would enlighten us?"

The Hansons looked at Zac.

"Why's everyone looking at me for?" he demanded.

"Oh gee, I wonder." Isaac replied.

Zac rolled his eyes.

"Ok, ok." He agreed. "But I warn you guys some of this story may seem… a little farfetched."
