Chapter 6

“This is nuts,” Zac complained. “We are never going to find them. We should call Trinity and -”

“Stop complaining,” Taylor frowned. “If you can’t say anything constructive, shut up. I’m trying to concentrate.”

Nate gave both of them reproachful glances.

“Maybe we should split up?” he suggested.

“Well, we could. Might be able to find him faster,” Doug said, “but that wouldn’t help us catch him. His powers make him a difficult target at best.”

“Hence why I think we should call Trinity and let them know,” Zac said. “We need everyone. I mean, hello? He’s completely evil. I mean, if you were a completely evil person, what would you do?”

“It depends on how smart you are,” Nate drawled.

“Yeah. Well, need I point out that while we would like to take him alive in an attempt to but him and Carla back together, he probably won’t have any gripes about killing any of us.”

Silence.

“He’s right,” Jessica said softly. “But hopefully Isaac’s lack of… of concern about taking lives will be tempered by a lack of desire to do so.”

More silence.

“What if it’s not?” Walker asked quietly.

“Pray he isn’t blood thirsty,” Taylor snapped. “Now can you all be quiet?”

“How hard can it be to find someone who’s empathic signature is 100% evil?” Nate muttered. “Okay, I know I’m not an empath but still…”

“Empathy has a range just like telepathy has,” Zac said. “See? I even know that and I’m not either.”

“Oh la-de-dah.”

Taylor opened his eyes and glared at them.

“In case you haven’t noticed,” he said testily, “I have to focus on what my empathy is receiving and what my probe is finding at the same time. It would help a great deal if you guys would be quiet. Please!”

Just as the two empaths were about to plead exhaustion, they came to a part of the road that was blocked off.

“What happened there?” asked Nate.

“Robbery…” Taylor replied, having used his probe to survey the situation, “back wall of the bank vault has been blown apart.”

“Well, that’s one way to do it,” Zac muttered.

“Cameras have been taken out. No one saw anything… but it’s only just happened.”

Everyone looked at each other, bar Walker who was more interested in driving.

“Isaac?” Doug suggested.

“No way to know for sure,” Jessica said, “but my gut says yes.”

“Well, we’re on the right track anyway,” Zac said cheerfully. “So, where do we go from here?”

“Home,” Taylor said. “I’m too tired – and I’m sure Jess is too – to do anything more today. And there’s nothing here to point where he may have gone. Let’s go home.”
