In turn, Jess closed here eyes and devoted her thoughts to concentrating on regenerating a new arm for Isaac.
Everyone watched. It was slow to start but…
"That is so weird." Zac said with an amazed grin.
"Yeah, very weird. But totally awesome." Blake put in.
"Definitely."
No one could blame them for saying so. Before their very eyes, flesh and bone formed. Veins, muscles, skin. It came faster after the first couple of seconds and was surely a sight none of them would ever forget. It was like watching someone unraveling a piece of material by just pulling a particular thread, except, y'know, it was in reverse.
And then, Jess started getting tired.
Well, if you were 13 and regenerating an entire limb of a 21-year-old guy, and it was the first time you ever regenerated a limb, and your Healing power needed to be enhanced in order to do it in the first place, you'd get tired quickly too!
The process started slowing.
"James, you need to enhance her more…" Taylor said softly.
Then he remembered something she had told him, about what happened last time her Healing got enhanced too much. She had sensed the inevitableness of death. Y'know, because the body is aging every second, hence dying of old age. Not a pleasant thing to sense, more like depressing.
"Ike? Put up a telepathic force field, but tune it so that only James' Enhance can get through, like we've been practicing."
Isaac gave a nod, then lifted his hand so he could create the force field better.
The regeneration didn't seemed to be slowing as much, but you could tell that Jess was fighting to stay awake. Everyone was thinking over their own powers, trying to find something more they could do.
Then Taylor got another idea. Using his Empathy, he detected the more energetic emotions in those around him.
"Jess? Take down your empaths-block ok?" he told her.
Jess was too tired to respond, but Taylor could tell that she had taken down the block that kept him from feeling her emotions when he started feeling them. The same second, he started projecting the more energetic emotions he had detected before on to her, hoping this might help to give her the extra energy she needed.
It appeared to help. Slowly, Isaac's wrist started forming. His palm… His thumb… the knuckles of his fingers… his nails…
Jess practically collapsed, completely exhausted. But she had done it. Not without a lot of help, but she had done it. Isaac, now with two arms again, picked her up and laid her down in the bed.
"What are you?" she whispered.
But Isaac could give no answer to this strange question. Not that it mattered, because Jess fell right asleep the moment her head touched the pillow.
