Chapter 20

It was late at night, and they were on their way to their next stop. Taylor sat up, noticing that the bus had stop and got out of his bunk.

“Are we there yet?” he asked their driver, who was getting out of his seat.

“No,” he replied, “but there’s a -” he never got to finish his sentence.

The bus door was forced open and in came a man and a couple of wolves. The driver gaped in horror as one of the wolves pounced on him, slashing at him with his claws. The driver yelled in pain.

Then the man spotted Taylor and grabbed at his throat.

“Where is she?” he demanded.

“Where is who?” Taylor gasped out.

“Don’t play games with me,” he growled. “Where’s Angela?”

Taylor gasped out a cough as the wolf who had attacked the driver sat down, watching with bloodied fur and claws. The driver, as far as Taylor could tell, was still alive.

But for how long?

“She’s not here!”

The man shook him, his hand tightening around Taylor’s throat.

In a burst of adrenaline, Taylor thrust out a probe into the man’s mind. As it locked around his brain and forced him to take his hand away from Taylor’s throat, Taylor learned that this was Angela’s father. Bloodlust.

The thing with taking hold of people’s bodies is that it takes so much effort to do even small things. While Taylor was confident that he could improve on this, he wasn’t too keening on the idea of practicing on anyone. Shame really. With more practice he may have been able to make people talk too. But too late for regrets. Instead Taylor had to make do with Bloodlust moving his hand, and stepping back.

He would have like to make Bloodlust get off the bus too, unfortunately, it had been a long day and it was practically the middle of the night. Not enough strength for that!

To make matter worse, Bloodlust, after a moment’s confusion, quickly realised what had happened and lunged for Taylor, his wolves right behind him. The good news however, was that Taylor had thought to let loose another probe and wakened Isaac. Isaac, of course, took a moment to wake up, and it was the moment that Bloodlust lunged that he realised what was happening.

Bloodlust and co growled fiercely when they smacked into the force field.

“Mutants!” Bloodlust accused.

“We prefer ‘Triggered’, thanks,” Taylor replied.

“Where’s my daughter?”

“Not here!”

“You know where she is!” Bloodlust yelled.
